Is my time slow, and how can I get better?

Hi, I have been speedcubing for 1.5 years now using CFOP. My fastest time is 42.93 seconds with my VCube 3. Is this speed good? I can get around 50 seconds consistently.

You should probably be improving a little quicker than that, and to be honest it could have alot to do with your cube. VCubes are not very good for fingertricking and for speed. I would suggest getting a standard speedcube from moyu, gans, or qiyi. on top of that, your cube is not even competition legal, because of its pillowed shape

I don't have the pillowed version. Usually it takes me around 40 seconds to finish the cross and F2L. Then it takes around 20 seconds for OLL and PLL.

Either way, the V-Cube 3 is a very outdated cube. I'd recommend getting something more modern, like a Valk3, WeiLong GTS, GuoGuan YueXiao, or Gan356 Air. As far as getting faster, I'd recommend trying to make your cross and F2L as efficient as possible, and try to look ahead as much as you can. For OLL and PLL, I don't know how many algs you know, but I'd definitely recommend learning full PLL, and later on you can proceed with full OLL.

I do 3-look last layer.

You don't need to switch your cube yet. Work on look ahead and learning algs.

I didn't switch to a speedcube until I averaged 50 seconds and the cube was an F-II. It mech was the same as an old rubik brand.

Maybe switch when you average around 30.

Also i improved slowly. I was averaging around 50 after a 1.5 years. I didn't average sub 20 until I cubed for 5 years.

Well my cube is consistently clacking as a result of a piece striking the center.

Also, since you are looking to improve your speed and because you haven't mastered a super advanced version of the CFOP LL method yet; you may want to research some of the other 3x3 speedsolving methods out there.

I had a really hard time improving using CFOP when I first started speedsolving. It made me think that cubing may not be my thing. I took a step back, reviewed a few things that I was doing, and realized that I wasn't having fun with that method. I found Roux, and after only a few test solves I was having fun solving the puzzle again. Who knows, maybe you just need to change the way you're solving the puzzle?

It really depends on how often and how much you practice. There's a big difference between "I have been speedcubing for 1.5 years now. I do 100 solves every day" (an average of 15 seconds would be normal) and "I have been speedcubing for 1.5 years now. I do an average of 5 every week" (an average of over a 50 seconds would be normal)

Agreed on the cube. Get a new one ASAP. The V-cube is horrible. You may think it's fine now, but after your first turn on a real speed cube, you'll never want to touch your V-cube again.

Another thing you can do if you want to improve is to make sure you can easily recognize PLL cases, since you know full PLL. You should get it to the point where you can recognize the case in under 1 second, and then be able to execute the alg in 4 seconds or less. If your PLLs are slow, I recommend learning new fingertricks for them and drilling them often to get them faster.

1.5 year is a lot of time and by now you should be having atleast a 40 second average. I would reccomend that you go to badmephistos site (badmephisto.com) and learn oll and pll algorithms and also change your cube and go for moyu gans or qiyi. They are all awesome cubes.

All I'm saying is you don't need a new cube yet to improve. Maybe you should get one now. All I am saying is you can improve with the cube you have so there is no urgent need to switch yet. However you will want to eventually. Also if you switch it'll be fine to go straight to a Valk, Weilong GTS, or Gans Air. I know some people talk of intermediate cubes but those are unnessary. Lastly if you don't have much money a budget cube will be fine. There are plenty to choose from.

In response to the whole "Should I get a new cube" debate, I'd say go for it. It can improve your times once you get used to it and algs will flow more smoothly. It is not necessary, but it seems dumb to put off getting something that will generally improve your experience.
