I was thinking of hosting a competition, after attending a bunch myself. I did look through the guide on the cubing usa website to find the criteria for making a competition.

To begin with, I have attended a decent number of competitions, so I have a general idea of how competitions are run. Then I looked for a suitable venue.

I first consulted the school if that was alright, and eventually I managed to reserve the school cafeteria (two large rooms with enough space for 150 competitors) on Saturday, April 22 from 9am-4pm (can be adjusted). Across the street is a pizza parlor, and the school itself has enough parking to host (as its used to hosting sports events). Not too far from the venue is Maplewood Village, which is home to a lot of restaurants. The school, in return, is going to use the money to fund a club donate to research of a certain disease that I forgot the name of but will add in later, and the robotics club.

The place in question is Columbia High in New Jersey, and considering it's a New Jersey competition I'm sure it would fill up quickly. My only issue is finding delegation and also what types of events people would like to have at the competition. Delegation will handle getting a website on CubingUSA up and running, but I'm not sure where to get timers.

tl;dr

I want to host a comp
I got a suitable venue
Need to know what people want as events
Need to find a delegate in the area willing to delegate

Any help is great,

Ren.

As far as events, it'd be really nice to see an NJ comp with weird events that people don't get to do much to allow people to qualify for Nats. I'd personally suggest some bigBLD for that reason (preferably 4BLD for me, lol), and maybe some side events that aren't held that often like Clock. You're surrounded by two NJ comps with 3-7 and OH, so I'd highly recommend having very little overlap and standing out from that.

You'd also want to make sure you can get your competition approved by the WCA; since it's in the same state as two other comps within a couple weeks of it, you might have some trouble getting it approved. Although, if you have some rare events, you might be able to make the case that it could be a qualifier for nationals (not sure how much this would actually help get the competition approved, but it's something to consider).

As far as delegates, there are at least 5 or 6 delegates in the general area (Kian, Sam, Chris, Corey, Arthur, Bob, etc.). I can't speak for any of them, but they're probably your best shots. Here's a list of delegates if you need one. :)

Event-wise, it would be cool to watch feet solves, and I know a few kids from comps who would be interested in big BLD.

As for the venue and date, luckily the list of possible dates that I can reserve the school are as follows:

3/4, 3/5
3/11, 3/12
3/18, 3/19
4/1, 4/2
4/22, 4/23
5/6, 5/7

It won't take too long for me to adjust the date.

Here are a list of events that I am currently considering:

Clock
3x3 Feet?
3x3 (given)

Pyra
3x3 Blind/Multiblind?
4x4 BLD

I'm open for more suggestions.

Also, throwback time return of the orange shirts (I invited them).

With already announced competitions in Flushing, Somerset and Newark all within 26 days of any of the dates you mention, it's going to be difficult to have any competition approved by the WCA in that area, unless you have no events in common with ones within that date frame (yes, that means no 3x3). From what I've heard, east coast events are planned out very far in advance compared to any other part of the USA, so it's probably too late to be initially planning a competition there so soon. I'd get in touch with the delegates that Daniel mentioned to be sure, but I don't think you're going to have much luck with the dates you have in mind.

If you want to know what people might like you could create a poll on their facebook page (if they have one; not sure if nj has one (but i would be surprised if they don't)) or maybe one in this thread as well.

Oh shoot that's like the best event list I've ever seen. Honestly, this competition sounds like it would be really awesome if it gets approved. :)

Hm, while scheduling might end up being an issue, the school could potentially be open around the same time next year.

That means watch out for this competition, as it might pop up next year.

However,

I think we should begin a thread for more general competition hosting; supplying those who want to try their hand at planning a competition with the basics. It's not really something I see discussed often, and the community should have easier access to information like that, with cubing becoming as big as it is.

I'm not really qualified to post anything like that, seeing as I've only been competing for about a year and a half (though cubing for much longer), so it would be nice to see a more experienced person or delegate create a general "How to Host" thread.

I think something like that would be most useful for those in smaller countries or places that don't usually hold a lot of competitions. That would make it easier for people in those areas to experience them, instead of flying or driving, which cost time and money.

I do understand that there's slight differences in competition setups in other countries, but we still all do abide by the WCA regulations set for us. Having at least a general guide would be incredibly helpful. While CubingUSA does have a nice page on it, I think a more in-depth post would be nice.
