It's interesting how Mats is one of very few people who uses his own cube (at least without the magnets) and method (at least subset). Only other two I can think of are Chris Tran and Erno Rubik. Pretty cool group to be in. :)
I'd count Tony Fisher too, although he's not going to be speedsolving with his giant 3x3 any time soon...

As the first real VLS world record I would say this is the first time in history that someone has set a world 3x3 record with their own method? Also, with no ready-made pairs, I agree this is definitely one of the more complex solves that resulted in a 3x3 single record. Inspirational. Chris Tran said in his ZZ-CT talk that these days you have to get 'really lucky' to get a 3x3 single record; Mats proves this is not the case (yet). With an easy cross and a PLL skip I would count this record as only mildly lucky.

A PLL skip definitely counts as lucky.

If Mats were 0.05 seconds faster he would've done that. Basically anyone sub-9 has the potential for that with a nice scramble.

I would agree -- lucky single times tend to be around half of your global average or just a little more...

Hyo-Min Seo got a 4.94 in comp when his previous PB was 7.21. Assuming a direct correlation, anyone with a 6.84 single or lower could theoretically get a 4.69 in comp. That's a good 121 people.
Yeah, lots of people have the ability to get that time, they just need a decent scramble, good execution, and some luck to do it.

I don't quite understand your reasoning. What if someone with 12s average gets a 6.84 single (I also don't understand why exactly 6.84)? Do you also think, that he's capable of getting sub4.75? Because for example I have official 6.87 and I am 100% sure that I won't ever get sub5 solve, even at home. It's much more convenient to say, that everyone with let's say low8 average is able to get WR-like time.

Today's top cubers need to be video'd at 120fps. Anything less and the slo-mo is just fuzzy.
