Hi,
I recently registered for my first tournament and I naively registered for several different competitions, even BLD and 4x4. I never solved 4x4 before except once almost 10 years ago to try it out. The tournament has a limit of 3 minutes for 4x4. Somehow, I was overly optimistic and thought this should be easy if I take a look. But now I am a bit scared now.
I first tried to figure it out by myself, I was able to solve it (but I redid the edges many times until I was lucky with parity) but it took very long. Then I did a tutorial about 2 edge chaining and tried it out and it took a shocking 7 minutes and I am super worried that I might not make it in the 3 minutes limit. Another problem I have is the fact that my 4x4 speedcube will only arrive the day before the competition, so I will have to practice with an old crappy cube that I have now until the competition.
So what would you say, was it overly optimistic to register for 4x4 and I should tell the organizers that I withdraw from 4x4?
Just to give you an estimate on my abilities: I know full OLL and my average is usually in the high 30s for 3x3. So I am definitely not a beginner, but ifI reached sub 40 only recently after cubing for 10 years, I am probably not the most talented cuber either (although, to be fair, only in the last few months I started taking it more seriously and learned OLL and PLL etc) Also, if I am nervous (which I will probably be during my first competition) then I am often 10 seconds slower or so.
Please don't give a simple yes/no answer, but tell me a bit more about it. E.g. it makes a huge difference for me if the answer is: "It's possible, but you would have to invest a lot of time on it and you wouldn't have much time to improve 3x3 and practice BLD." or "Should be easy, just solve it a few more times and you should get below 3 minutes soon."
