Hi everyone who happens to stumble upon this!

I am a 17 year old from England called James who was strangely gifted a rubicks cube for christmas. Or so i thought it was a strange gift, as now i have found my self engrossed in the vast community of speedcubing!

I am a college student currently studying A2 chem, bio and maths. And thanks to my grasp of algorithms from my studies i have learnt how to complete the cube at a fast pace from what i can tell, currently averaging at just below 2mins after 2 days!

I have fallen in love with the accomplishment of completing a cube at a fast pace, so i have been doing research into wr's and famous cubers, and have been experimenting with different solve methods, currently favouring CFOP i believe. I have also done research into cubes and found that the standard rubicks brand is bested by many other brands, so i ordered what i think was called a dayan zhanchi after looking at various videos and reviews.

I look forward to talking to the community and i hope you can accept me with open arms, and i hope to soon be sub 1min and then far lower!

Welcome! The Zhanchi will do fine for you, but it is considered outdated as a choice for top cube, as most of the best cubers have moved on to more advanced cubes, such as the Moyu Aolong, Gans 356, and several others. But the Zhanchi is plenty good enough to take you under a minute and beyond. Best of luck to you!

Welcome to the world of speedcubing! As already said, the Zhanchi is kind of old, but it's fine! As you get faster there are also other twisty puzzles you can try. Such as pyraminx, skewb and my personal favourite- the megaminx. You can also try your skills on the bigger cubes like 5x5,6x6 and 7x7.Good luck!

Hello! :) I'm from England too! :) About a year younger than you though I'm still doing AS though my maths is probably not exactly AS-level. Hopefully I may see you around at comps and stuff when I decide to actually start going.

What methods have you look at so far? I would recommend at least Roux, Petrus and ZZ in addition to CFOP. Other less common ones (like SSC, M-CELL, Briggs etc -shameless self plug :p) may not go amiss either as that will help you to increase your understanding of the cube.

Speaking of cubes, a Zanchi, while by no means a bad cube, is definitely outclassed by the majority of modern speedcubes such as the Gans 356s, Aolong GT, tanglong, thunderclap etc.

You could also look into other puzzles such as the square-1, megaminx and skewb as well as larger cubes to add some variety.

Anyway, I hope you have a fun cubing experience and feel free to ask anything on the forums, the community is helpful and supportive (as long as you don't bump too many old threads :p)

i always wondered, what method do you use for speedsolves?

i always wondered, what method do you use for speedsolves?

Primarily Roux (almost sub-15- yes I'm still a noob I've only solved a cube a year ago and only started practising in march. I switched to roux even later than that though) though I'm sub-20 with CFOP (well... "CFOP"- I do VHLS/COLL/EPLL though the COLL is mostly mega OCLL and some CMLL algs) as well (weirdly I'm mot CN with CFOP than Roux- x2y roux, just discovered i can fully CN CFOP without practise for sub-25ish) and sub-30 with basically any other method you can throw at me including freestyling.

Probably one of his/her own CFOP/roux hybrid/variants...

Lol I'm a boy (sorry to dissapoint anyone :p). I do sometimes do the variants but the only self-created methods I sometimes do for speed other than Roux are M-CELL (though not with all the algs) and occasionally SSC.

I may switch to one of them later but I want to be decently fast with Roux first though atm I'm trying to improve my mega more than 3x3 (though I'm still doing some theory for that)

Hello and welcome, hiimjumes.

I have a somehow un-related question to you, fellow speedcubers: when would you say dayan zhanchi was at its peak? I mean what was the time that almost anyone used it as their main speedcube? Thanks
