One slight improvement you could make to that alg is to replace the 2R in the setup with Rw, because wide moves are easier to do than slices. You could also do [Lw F: [2R2, U' 2L' U]] which is shorter in QTM and nice to execute, but I don't think there's anything shorter than 12 in HTM.

Sadly not, I don't run into these cases with floating buffers. I would just solve some more centers and then try and solve it with [2R2, U' 2L2 U] or [y x': [2R U 2R', 2D2]] at the end.
