The only significantly unique parts of CFOP are the cross and F2L (although some methods do use variants of F2L). CFCE is regarded as a different method, although it is very similar and it is only the last layer that is different.

There are many ways of doing the last layer. Having CFOP, CFCE, CFB (BLL), CFEL (ELL, L4C), CFEZ (EO, ZBLL), CFCEP (COLL, EPLL) etc. all as different acronyms is quite pointless and confusing. Most of them are quite uncommon, but are still ways of solving the LL after F2L.

CFL (cross, F2L, LL) seems like a term that would have CFOP, CFCE etc. as subsets, but it never seems to be used. It's been used to mean Corners, First Six Edges, Last Six Edges, Complete First Layer for Pyraminx, and supposedly once to actually mean Cross, F2L, LL.

I have no good way to finish this post.

EDIT: I just realised this is what I'm doing a few minutes before New Year's Day.

CFOP has been the acronym used by everyone for forever for The Fridrich method, so I don't see why changing it would be very important. Also, while there are countless different ways of solving the last layer, OLL then PLL is what almost eveybody does at first, and then they learn other methods. Also, solving cross, first two layers/six peices/ first layer (for pyraminx), then last layer is Layer by Layer.

yeah and some people influence the LL quite a bit during F2L. we ought to call it "C"

that stands for cubing.

but srsly though. CFOP can be pronounced "seefop". CFL has no good pronunciation

See-Fell? See-ful?

I don't really see the necessity of adding one more acronym into our lexicon, especially if the only utility is to be LESS specific.

And along with what TDM pointed out, you might want to include the Free-FOP'ers out there. So...

Free-Fell? Free-ful?

CFOP is all that's needed IMO (although I still would rather call it Fridrich because it makes more sense considering all the variations and lookahead and optimizations and piece control that people do). It's very rare to hear CFCE, CFB, CFEL, CFEZ, CFCEP, etc. and they are all just understood as Fridrich variants anyway.

CFCE isn't too uncommon, the rest are very rare though. "See fez" sounds quite interesting.
