[Unofficial] Maxim Chechnev won the semi-final of the show Ukraine's Got Talent

proof please?

1. I can provide reports from Youtube Analytics stating that my video "How to solve the Rubik's Cube" (in Russian) had clear spikes in the number of watches April on 6-7 (Maxim's first performance), and on 27-28 (semifinal). It was about 2,000 extra watches in each of those spikes, and even if only 5-10% were watching not for curiousity, but for the first time solving, we already have >100 "newcomers".
2. There was a noticeable increase in the number of new people on the speedcubing "Facebook" group (http://vk.com/ruspeedcubing) based on comments on the wall, the number of subscribers increased from 15,100 to 15,340 within last 2-3 days.
3. My sister, after watching the show, said "I finally decided to learn how to solve the Rubik's Cube". That means, +1 cuber :)

Is it enough?
And I think, what I can see, it's only a peak of an iceberg :)))

You just pulled "5-10%" out of the air, this is not proof.

There is no proof that these people are not already speedcubers, or non cubers just wanting to keep up with the latest cubing news.

Is it enough?

No.

There were other cubers in tv shows, but at least they don't cheat.

Cheating refers to breaking rules, however there are no rules of using cubes on a show. There are WCA-rules for the speedcubing competitions, but they are not applicable to the show. No rules were broken, therefore no cheating here at all, imho

I would agree with the word "trick" under that definition, as indeed it was a trick that made solving of 7x7 BLD within 2 minutes. But it was not "cheating".

It would be the same as fingertricks in speedcubing. They allow solving cubes faster, but they are tricks, not cheating.

Here, in terms of the show, it was also a "trick" for entertainment of people, what actually is the main goal of any show, people were entertained, and the goal was definitely achieved.

And, I repeat again that no rules were broken, "7x7 BLD" and "Solving two cubes simultaneously" are not the official events (pls see Article 9b of WCA-Regulations), and anything related to scrambles or methods of solving are not applicable in this case. In terms of show, everything was fair :)

Did you seriously just say that performing a finger trick and solving a 7x7 BLD in 2 minutes with a pre-determined scramble are equally comparable? They are in no way the same type of tricks. Finger tricks are helpful tools. 7x7 BLD without a proper scramble is deceiving.

Did you understand what I said before?

Competitions are for competing, the faster the better, fingertricks serve that purpose of speed.

Shows are for entertaining people, something should be spectacular in there, and solving cube BLD by whichever method it was definitely served that purpose of entertainment.

Please don't compare apples and oranges.

7x7 BLD without a proper scramble is deceiving.
What is the "proper scramble" for 7x7 BLD? (if it's not the official event)

By the way, a little bit off-topic. I think that future 7x7 blindfolers should provide their scrambles in the description to the video, just for a case :)

Also: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cheating doesn't even mention rules at all.

There was somewhere another article (don't already remember exactly which), where it was mentioned about "cheating" = "breaking rules", and also something about "making the identification of cheating is a subjective process" or something like that.

anyway, I hope this discussion will be ended soon as everybody has a right to have personal point of view :)

Aside from the fact that you're wrong about the use of the word cheating, it doesn't matter what words you use to describe it. It's still just awful.

Decent quality and quite importantly:
By the way, I checked few videos on Youtube with 7x7BLD solvings, and noticed that sometimes a lot of pieces on the cubes are already on their positions.
With random scrambles this happens, I don’t blame anyone. May be yes, it would be a good idea to implement term “decent scramble”, as let’s say “no more than 5% (or 0%) of pieces should be on their positions”.
But in terms of quality of the scramble of Maxim’s cubes, they looked as good as cubes on other youtube videos.

not known to the solver.
It means it’s also reasonable to implement one more rule where blindfolders have to ask somebody else to scramble the cube before solving (in addition to keeping scramble for future reference)

Oh, absolutely. Yours just happens to be wrong.
Even though we have opposite opinions, we are right both. I look at the things broader, beyond the scope, and understand why I’m not being understanded.

How many cubers were advanced to the finals on “Got Talented” shows in their countries? Not much, I believe. I assume, because they were thinking within speedcubing rules, what may not be spectacular for audience who doesn’t understand anything in cubing.
Now it was done a step forward, and misunderstanding “How can it be, that cubes were used differently, than on WCA-competitions?!” is absolutely OK, I understand this :)

You more and more remind me one ex-co-worker from a small South-Asian country who had a mental disorder that psychologist call “Disqualifying the positive” Cognitive Distortion”. It is when a person sees only negative things in the world and reject (disqualify) seeing positive.

On that show, the speedcuber came to the stage, said to audience “I have 20 (nice looking, shiny) cubes 7x7 and I memorized all of them! You can pick up any of them, and I’ll solve it without looking at it”. He throw a toy to spectators, and who caught the toy provided him with a number (7). Eyes were shut, cube #7 given, cube is solved, everybody is impressed and happy.

If somebody would come on stage with only one cube, and just solved by reversing scramble, this would definitely be something close to what people call cheating, and I would agree.

In contrast, in the discussed case, a lot of other things around were done, and all of them made a good show from solving a Rubik’s cube.

Of all of this, you see only the process of solving the cube, questioning this, and you are right within your scope. Looking at the same, I see many other things, and I feel I’m right as well :p

Your face looks like it was on fire and someone put it out with a fork.

Whether he cheated or not, every single noncuber who saw that video now thinks that this guy can do 7BLD and that 7BLD execution can be done in about 2 minutes. It's BS like this that is always harmful to the BLD community. What happens when they are not at all impressed by actual 7BLD solvers like Mike Hughey because they are slower than him? I'm not saying that I disagree with his choice to do this because I would probably do the same thing if I had to impress a bunch of non-cubers, but it is certainly harmful and a little bit embarrassing.

No, that's stupid. It's a *random* scramble. Pieces are going to be solved by probability alone. Forcing pieces to be unsolved means that the scrambles will not be representative and that solvers will already know stuff about the scramble before they start.

But in terms of quality of the scramble of Maxim’s cubes, they looked as good as cubes on other youtube videos.
They don't to me, but that's not the point. The point is that he knew the moves of the scrambles before he started. These are not random scrambles that he had to completely memorize - these are setup solves on specially chosen "scrambles". He had unfair knowledge of the cubes' positions, compared to actual blindfold solves. It's the same kind of thing as people who claim they can solve a cube by just doing R U L D over and over, because they have set up a position where that actually works.

It means it’s also reasonable to implement one more rule where blindfolders have to ask somebody else to scramble the cube before solving (in addition to keeping scramble for future reference)
No it isn't. You just generate a scramble from a trusted source (e.g. a random timer) and apply it. It is pretty clear when someone is cheating, and besides, unofficial results are unofficial anyway.

How condescending of you.

You right. But probably a non-cuber never know Hughey.

Simon Westlund WON Sweden's Got Talent (or a variant), and he did not "cheat" or anything. He is a knight in shining armour.

This whole thread made me sad, and I'm even I'm a little bit glad that the video seems to be blocked in my country.

Did he say anywhere that he memorized the inverse of the scramble? Did he mention that the scrambles are comletely different? What did he say about what exactly he will do during the show? About the scramble? About the solving method?

That's what I tried to propose couple pages ago, kind of a constructive solution. For example, any his interview or publication after the Final could shed light to people how complicated blindfolding of big cubes is. Although first step is made, there is always a chance to make a second one in the corrected directions :)

Agree, that’s true :)
By the way, today on “Russian Facebook” speedcubing group 4 new people arrived asking “How to solve the cube blindfolded?”. Before it barely happened once a week. At least, 4 more people will find out in few months who Mike Hughey is :)

Wow, thanks for telling, I didn't know. I'll definitely try to find on youtube his performance.

May be the video is blocked for mobile devices? It seems many other people from the UK have seen it.
And you're right, this discussion makes me sad as well. I hope it will either turn to positive way, or may be deleting the thread is also an option. But I would prefer turning to positive way :)

I will provide translation of that part in about 5-6 hours.
