I find pc plastic is good
Good for/at what? Disrupting Endocrine systems in animals and humans?

For the OP:
I almost LOL-ed as hard with this test as with the recent post about white PVC being good and black PVC being mixed...
There is a much better way for "home-identification" of plastics: light it on fire!

I may be new when it comes to cubing but I work in plastics since 13 years.

Well, it was true that "back in the day" (when DIY cubes weren't even existent) the random cubes people uses often came from unanonymous toy manufacturers in China, where they often mixes recycled plastic material and then dye them black to hide the impurity. But today with the growing competition between different puzzle brands, nobody dares to use waste plastics anymore, so there really aren't any difference between the colors anymore.

I remember saying this several times in the past, even before you joined :p Though sadly only a few people actually listened

And still, I have black guhongs and white guhongs. And I like the white feeling much more !!! (more smooth, slightly slower than black but really more enjoyable for me).

Same here. Black versions of the GuHong and LingYun seem less smooth. Quite a few people claims this. Mass delusions?

Could be various things:
- pigment type
- pigment loading
- day to day variance in the molding shop
- different material grades (we don't know if they add color MB themself or if they buy colored-in material so it could be the exact same material or completely different grades/types)

Unless somebody wants to do a detailled analysis of the materials we'll never know :-)

You seem to be the perfect candidate for that ;)

I could actually have done that "inhouse" in my previous job (General Electric Plastics) :-)

In my current job I would have to outsource it so that makes it a no go...

I recently got one of the 99 cent lanlan 2x2s that they were selling on Lightake. When I compared it to the same one I bought from Lightake when they first came out, it is obvious that the plastic is different. My original one is shinier and feels denser. The new one is duller, feels lighter and is not nearly as smooth as the original type, even if you consider lubrication and breaking in.

I am sure that the type of plastic used by some manufacturers changes depending on cost or availability. It can really affect the way a cube feels.

wow thats fast

The old-vs-new black Dayan plastic thing and the Force Cube's itsNotTheSame-yesItIs-noItsNot-yourStupid-noYourStupid conversation got me curious, so I asked hknowstore's Calvin who in turn asked Dayan about the plastics. Here's what I got.

There are 2 types of plastic materials being used for Dayan 3x3 cubes, including taiyan, guhong, lingyun, lunhui and zhanchi, that are ABS mixed with PC and pure ABS.

ABS mixed with PC, it makes the cube more rigid and hard, with little noise when turning.
Pure ABS, it makes the cube soft, silent when turning. Most cubers like this one.

Old version dayan 3x3 :
Black and white : ABS mixed with PC
Red, Orange, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple : Pure ABS
The factory has no stock of the old ones, may be some resellers have little stocks in their warehouse.

New version dayan 3x3 :
Black and white : Pure ABS
Red, Orange, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple : Pure ABS
The factory are currently using pure ABS for all dayan 3x3 cubes in the production.

Note that ABS "is a copolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene. The proportions can vary from 15 to 35% acrylonitrile, 5 to 30% butadiene and 40 to 60% styrene" (Wikipedia), so not every ABS is the same (and Cubenovice mentioned some other factors earlier in this thread). I might ask again specifically about the Force Cube vs factory-made single-colored cubes, though Calvin said he's a bit busy and I'm thankful for what I got already.

(while the Force Cube thread caused me to ask for and post this, please don't use this thread to continue it here with more fighting and baseless claims)

That's fascinating, thanks for finding that out Stefan. I was curious if everyone loved the pure ABS so much why they didn't come out with a black ABS... and it turns out they did :) good news for everyone it would seem.

I was just reading the Force cube thread and I kept wondering why the hell they would blend ABS with PVC...
Thank you Stefan / Calvin for clarifying it was ABS with PC (typically referred to as PC-ABS blends).

LOL at GE I actually worked at Cycoloy blends which is just their trade name for PC-ABS blends :)

Good to see some one close to the source stating that all their cubes are made from the same plastic.
Offcourse al my previous points on pigment types, loading, ABS grades, molding parameters etc still stand so you can still have "different" cubes.
