Win $100 for solving a 3x3 in under 5 minutes: history

In regards to inspection time: For the US Regional Championships(the competition that Minh Thai won to get to the World Championships), they apparently were given 30 seconds to inspect the cube before solving. I wonder why they changed it to 15 seconds later on. Was it simply because they felt 30 seconds was too long (which it is considering many speedcubers rarely even use up their whole 15 seconds for inspection now-a-days - I do see where they might use up the 30 seconds to plan out multiple pieces beyond the cross though)?

not trying to offend people here, but i think it is safe to say that most of us
here have learned how to solve the cube via internet, directly or indirectly.

The few people that were able to do it 3 decades ago were the same people that created the methods that are available to us today. Now in the Information Era, everything they developed is available to us so easily, and those of us that were bored one morning and decided to look it up on google, and then we got introduced to the wonderful world of speedcubing...even better then Narnia

Not true speed cubing doesn’t have talking beavers (So Narnia wins). But I agree with you on every thing else.

But Stanford has a cube club and Narnia. :p
(And Nationals.)

Haven't seen this reason mentioned yet: Time. Back then serious speedcubing was around for maybe two or three years. When it got big again in 2003, we weren't that much faster (if at all). So we didn't start from zero *and* have had six years for progress. I'm certain the 1980s cubers would've improved a lot had speedcubing not died early on.

how fast would you guys go with the method of the old days?

You mean corners first??? prob decently fast... though I wouldn't know. Maybe if Fridrich hadn't created her method people would be getting sub 10s with it... Most say fridrich is faster and easier to learn (less algs)

Counting Fridrich (with different algs) as the method of the old days, I'm pretty sure I could sub-20. I can also get about 30 seconds with corners first, and 25 with working corner LBL + 4-look last layer (which I'm completely sure people could do in the 80s).

Of course corners first can go very fast. At least if people care about really optimizing it instead of stupidly dismissing it as "oh it's an pld method, it must be bad" and focusing only on Fridrich...
