Don' think Old Pochman is easier than LBL.
You could argue it uses less algs but T and Y perm are loooong algs for a beginner and there is a serious risk of getting lost in (un) doing the set up moves.
To the OP:
you could make the LBL of youcandothecube.com easier in a few spots:
- if a proper white cross is difficult you can do the daisy step before it
- in stage 5 you can reduce the "3 states" to two stages.
Eliminate "state 1"
Just look at it as:
if there is one yellow corner sticker on top, put this in the left corner
if there is no yellow corner sticker on top: rotate top layer until a left sticker is facing towards you
By treating "state 1" as a "state 3" you wil have to do an extra repetition of the alg but at least you do not have to explain three states to your brother.
As he gets more confident with the 2 states you can always add the last one.
- put step 6 in between the 2 steps of stage 5
if you first permute the corners you can use a very easy (to remember) alg for switching two corners.: L U' R' U L' U' R
explain as:
left hand:
left towards you
top towards you
right hand:
right towards you
top towards you (see, it is the same with both hands)
left hand
left side back
top towards you
right hand
right side back (see, the same again, exept you do not need the top turn)
So you are alternating left and right hand and doing the same moves with both and top is always towards you... Very easy to get used too.
For the final stage: do not teach both algs for clockwise and anti clock wise.
Just pick one: the only thing that can happen is that you may have to execute one extra time.
Might as well pick an easier alg:
R U' R U R U R U' R' U' R2
Execute in groups of two: R U' - R U - R U - R U' - R' U' - R2 and he will get used to it very fast.
Once he feels comf; with this one you can do the exact same thing on the left side to rotate pieces in the other directions.
(Explain as: right handed alg moves the front edge to the right, left handed alg moves the edge piece to the left, possible ref to the insertion of the 2nd layer edges)
This is the method my 5 year old daughter uses and avarages ~ 2 minutes with.
