Which alg do you use for this F2L??
imagecube.php

EDIT: I use: R2 U R' U R U2 R' U' R'

(RUR'U2) (RUR'U') (RUR')

I do do the U2 by pushing the upper layer with my right ring finger.

That is assuming it is in the front right position like in the picture.

I use a number of things depending on if I have empty slots around. I normally use the same alg that Timothy posted, but I am getting to be a bigger and bigger fan of the following alg:

d R' U' R l U' R' U l' U R

Wow, I've been solving this case really badly. y L' U2 L y L U2 L' U2 L U' L'. Fail. I like Zubon's algorithm, I think I'll use that.

(U2) R2 U2 R' U' R U' R2

This is what I use if it is in one of the back slots or the corner edge pair is U2 out of position.

It is a shorter alg, however I hate the R2 moves as it wrecks my look ahead. Keeping everything on the top helps me see which move to do next.

If BR is open, you can do this: R' U' R U' R' U R2 U' R' It's 2-gen and really fast.

Kirby's alg is good to know if you can spot the pair already at the (U2) position.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've been realizing for a while that this is my single most damaging F2L case (because I wind up solving it way too often - I don't seem to be able to avoid it very well, unlike most of the other bad cases). I could see a good algorithm for this shaving a full second off my overall average, since I use it so often.

(I've been using R U R B' R' B U2 R', which is just awful.)

Since I'm partial to optimal algorithms, I'll probably start with Tim's algorithm.

I'm curious, though, what about the mirror? Does everyone just do the mirror on the left side for these, or do you use something different?

I only use empty slot F2L. If this was the 4th and last F2L pair, I would insert the corner cubie first and do a middle layer alg to insert the edge cubie.

Mirror it from the back or the left, depending on where the slot is.

I use U R U' R' U' R U' R' U R U' R', unless it is the last pair, then I know it a few way to influence edges.

Yeah, I do the same.

... unless it is the last pair, then I know it a few way to influence edges.

I'm assuming this is one of them: F R U' R' F' L' U' L. It's pretty nice, and useful. :)

Most commonly,

1) (U2) R2 U2 R' U' R U' R2' or (U2) R2 U2 R' U' R U' R2

or if I am in the mood

2) R U R' U2 R U R' U' R U R' which I learn from badmephisto

I can solve both algorithms from all 4 slots. However I do 2) slower when using left hand, so 1) is the most commonly used fail safe algorithm.

I have tried a gazillion other algorithms, even with empty slots etc, but still come back to 1) cos you can't get much better than a 7-8 move 2-gen algorithm that you can use without empty slot.

More interestingly, what do you in these cases? Do you do cube rotation or d moves to do the normal algorithms or do you use other algorithms to avoid cube rotations?

The algorithms I know (though I don't use them frequently) for these cases are:

Pic on left:
R U R2' F R F' R U' R' (learn from Feliks)

Pic on right:
F' L' U L F R U R' (learn from Erik)

I really like that case from the back actually: B L U' L' B' R' U' R
