Hi Everybody,

I've seen videos of speedcubers solving rubik's cubes at the official competitions. I notice the coordinators put a black box over the cube jsut before the speedcube starts. What is that black box for?

It prevents the cuber from inspecting the cube before the official inspection time. In the current regulations, the cube is also recovered after inspection while the cuber gets their hands on the timer.

In the new regulations, it looks like the second covering may not occur.

If the question is : "what is that black box?" Then I think you've explained it yourself : a black box.

I believe that he asked this: What is that black box for?
not this: what is that black box
so for the right question. The black box is used to prevent people from inspecting the cube from over 15 seconds. After the 15 second inspection time the judge puts the box on the cube and asks the competitor that is he ready and when the competitor is ready the judge takes the box away from the cube so that the cuber can solve it.

So tomorrow, at the princeton open, they won't have a second covering?
