Weird break?

I had my first cube break today and was just kind of wondering what could have made it that fragile. My store bought Rubiks 3x3 Cube (lubed with Jig-A-Loo) was being used in the hallway while talking to a friend... that friend slaps the cube out of my hand and when it hit the floor it fell completely apart. Weird part to me was that the center piece broke completely off.
I threw the cube out, but the rod part of the center piece broke off of it. My question is could it have been the jig-a-loo that made it break? Only 1 center piece broke off, the rest of the cube was fine (I know im retarted for throwing it out the pieces could have come in handy...). I have another cube (Its my only cube now and its an icon -_-) and i just dont want that one to break. Have you ever heard of something like this happening?

Yea i did. I popped off an edge and sprayed a couple of times in there. I thought jig-a-loo was a silicone spray? I lubed it about 3 weeks ago.

Yes, Jig-a-loo is silicone spray.

Popping off an edge and then spraying is the correct procedure, but if you spray for more than 5 seconds you MIGHT have problems.

The "rod" from the center cap is the rivet (similar to a nail) that is attached to the core. It probably came off because of too much force hitting it when the cube dropped....

I have never seen jig-a-loo in my life, but my friends storebought broke the same way. I threw it to the ground, and the red center piece broke in two.

I wish i kept the cube to explain further. But i am glad to know that it wasnt the jig-a-loo. I love that stuff :) Actually the entire center face like broke off...hard to explain. You know how on the center piece there is a black extension of the piece that gets riveted to the core? The black extension broke. Not the core. It was slapped out of my hand pretty hard...

That extension piece is the rivet. It broke off? Wow, it must have been like slammed out of your hand for it to come out like that.

And yes I've had an entire layer fall of before, but that was with a very loose DIY cube. I know what you're talking about. :)

I think he means part of the center piece itself. Where place where the screw/rivet goes through.
And I would have to say that it definitely isn't the jig-a-loo. I have been using it for a long time and I haven't seen any cracks or weaknesses and I've dropped my cube a few times

Yea exactly! The place where the rivet goes through! She slapped it really hard so yea it hit the ground really hard. At least its not the jig-a-loo! Its like my only lube! Thanks for the info guys!

Same thing happned to me!

Conversation:
A kid says, "Hey, can I see your cube?"
-OK
-(He tosses the cube in the air a few times and catches it.)
-"Hey", said I, "You might drop it."
-"Don't worry." He tosses it again and he couln't catch it and it dropped then the center piece broke off. He said that he was going to repay me with two new cubes. He never did...

I've had at least four storeboughts, go that way.
Once, being thrown back to me. (Wasn't my fault the throw was short ):. )
Second, the same as above.
Third being thrown up in class.
And fourth, there was this one kid playing with my cube(I was away eating lunch) and back then, a lot of kids cubed in my school(all beginners method except for one or two) and the LOVEEEEED TO DO "R U R'" over and over. Sadlymy cube broke ):

Now I don't lend my cube out.
