Way to now

Funny story behind my cubing, actually.
Friend had one, could solve it in like, 3 minutes. I was amazed. I went out and got one. 1 week later I had it solved(On my own). After I did it, I looked up the solution online so I could do it every time. Then didn't care about it. Few months later I went out with a girl and saw a cube in her purse. In my manliest voice I said, "Let me solve that for you." Solved it in about 2 minutes. She then solved it in about 1:30, and it was on. We started going out and racing. We have long since broken up, but are still great friends, and still race eachother.

anyway. When I was at about 50 seconds I looked into Fridrich F2L, and a 4LLL. That moved to 3 look, now at a 2.5LLL.

I now average about 20-23 seconds. The girl I talked about before now averages high 20s(I win :))
what a marvellous story =)

It started when I saw my bro solving the cube around a minute out in Val D'Isere in March 08. Asked him how he does it, and the response was along the lines of 'just work it out'. After a few hours I could only manage F2L, so cheated and found Dan Brown's solution on YouTube :o After a bit of practice, realised I wasn't going to beat bro with this method, so set about finding better ones.
  • First tried a vanilla corners-first method. Liked the small number of algs, but was still slow.
  • Then moved to Petrus, with a Ryan Heise LL. Very impressed by zero-alg approach, but still slow.
  • Finally bit the bullet and started Fridrich using intuitive F2L + 4LLL. Managed to get my times down to under a minute, yay :)
  • Found speedsolving.com in late Jan 09 and discovered ZZ. Started off much slower than Fridrich, but started beating my old times a few weeks later.
Since then I've been tuning up my ZZ solve and progressively nudging my times down. Now using OLL/full PLL, and planning most EOLines on inspection. A distinct lack ZZ learning materials prompted me to create a tutorial to help other ZZ'ers.

I've now smashed my bro's PB by over 30sec :p Currently trying break the sub-30 barrier, and trying for a sub-20 PB. Eventually aiming to get competitive enough for comps, n hopefully spread the Zed ;)
