Want to start learning Fridrich.

Hay all,

I'm new to speedcubing, and cubing in general.
I practiced 3x3 a lot in the last weeks, and got to times about 1:30 with the Lay-by-layer method by monkeydude1313 on YouTube (dont know if that matters). Then I learned Fridrich F2L from badmephisto and got my time down to about 1:10 to 1:20 (depends how lucky I am).

Now, I want to start learn all this OLL, PLL stuff which seems rather complicated to me, but I hope its just practice (and it is, according to most posts on this section =D ).
I just got a few questions, and it would be helpful if someone could answer them so even a newbie like me can understand it :)

1. When I used the seach function, I read most of the time that learning PLL first is better than learning OLL first. Now, I'm confused: Doesn't PLL need OLL? When I want to use a PLL alg, my whole top face has to be yellow. How can I get to that without knowing OLL?

2. Is it advisable for a beginner like me to start learning Fridrich with the 2-look- PLL / -OLL, or are there some intermediate steps?

3. Also, is 1:10 a okay time to start learning something new or should I pratice LBL even more?

I am very happy about any answer! (Oh, by the way I'm German, some of my English could be funny, please bear with me ;) )

-Learn 2-look OLL (a.k.a 2 step OLL), with 2-look OLL you orient last layer edges, then the corners.
-Learn 2-look PLL, first permute the edges then the corners.
-Learn intuitive F2L if you havn't already. (this may come slowely but just learn all the cases, then study them and eventually it will all become intuitive)

After you have mastered the above, learn full PLL. If you want to get faster learn full OLL.

Most people move onto an advanced method when they average below 1 minute, but it shouldn't matter too much.

Hope this helped. :)

There is something called 2-look oll. You orient the cross first, then there are 7 cases to memorize. Then do pll.

Generally you want to go with full PLL first, since there are considerable less algorithms to memorize, compared to full OLL.
I would say maybe practice F2L a bit more first before moving onto the next stage. Averaging 1:20 like you are right now, I don't see the full benefits of memorizing the last layer algs kicking in as much. Try to cut down to like, a minute or 50 seconds, then go with the last layer algs.

I never bothered with the intermediate 2 look PLL. If I came across a case I didn't know, I would just perform a quick PLL that I knew would create a case I could handle. Learning the PLLs really comes a lot quicker than you would think.

PLL is a much better thing to know full because:
1. Less algorithms. You will digest them slowly. It only has 21, and full OLL has 57
2. Quicker. 2 look OLL doesn't take as much time off as 2 look PLL does.
3. Easier to see what to do. Sometimes on the PLL cases you'll have to think when using 2 look PLL
4. Blindold cubing. If you ever go freestyle BLD, you need all the PLL's.
5. Patterns. Not really a reason, but you can make your cube look pretty :P

By the way, I started learning Fridrich at 1:20 and I was fine. I didn't even know a good F2L. Keep cubing!

When you learn F2L make sure you execute slow to understand the movements...your times will be slower at first however, if you learn it slowly and learn how to deal with different cases your times will improve. I am working on not rushing...so far my times are dropping from 12/15/09 averages just under 2 minutes to now I'm in the low 50's with high 40's here and there. The improvement came from the advice given here, slow down and make efficient moves.

Search youtube for badmephisto, by far he has some of the best videos including F2L.

That's exactly what I did. ex. For G's ill do 3 edge cycle followed by U perm

Isn't that 2 look PLL?. I mean 2 look stands for 2 algorithms. You may choose between the edges and then do the corners, or maybe do any oter PLL you already know, and then finish the cube.

Actually 2 look means you recognize twice, you can have 1 look OLL but still use 2 algorithms.

Wow, thanks all for your massive response!
So I'll stick with my Fridrich F2L and beginner-toplayer until I get about 0:55 or 1:05.

I got another question regarding F2L: What do you understand by intuitive F2L? Just being able to do it without thinking of the algorithms? Now I can already do that, but its mostly because I did it so often that I just know what face I turn in which way when theres a certain case.

Nevertheless, I do my F2L by forming bars of a corner and a edge and then inderting it into my slot, and doing that 4 times. Can you call that intuitive? I jsut dont get it :-/

Yes, that could be considered very basic intuitive. If you practice it enough and understand it though you can get insanely fast.

*Looks for post I made a while ago*

There's 21 PLL algs, and 57 OLL algs.

Here's what I recommend you should go about learning Fridrich:

Learn intuitive F2L.

Learn 2 look PLL. Only 6 algs to learn.

Learn 2 look OLL. Only 9 algs to learn.

After that, you can start learning full PLL, then start learning full OLL.

Badmephisto's "How to become a speedcuber" guide is pretty good.

So when you first start, you really only need to learn about 15 algs, and just with that, some people can get really good times.

I use intuitive F2L + 2 look OLL + Full PLL and I average around 30 secs.

i think you should start looking ahead by 40 sec average. though it doesn't hurt to learn earlier. :D by looking ahead, your F2L looks like one huge algorithm that probably not only looks awesome, but it is faster than Fast, slow, Fast, slow. the slow parts being looking for f2L pairs. 4 Look Last Layer is very easy to learn, nothing like the OLL's.

I got to a 30 sec average with full pll + 2look oll and no look ahead.

I can't seem to get any faster unless I look ahead.
