For F2L, try to find corners first, then edges. For example, scan the top layer for any corners with white (or your cross color), and then find the corresponding edge by searching both colors of the corner.

Consider this scramble: RU'R'U2RUR'(with your cross color on bottom)
See the white corner? As soon as you find it start searching for either a blue or a red sticker(in this example blue is on UL).
Now check if it is really the blue-red edge and if it is, insert it normally with U2RUR'URU'R'
