Very very quick question from a beginner

I just started speedcubing literally today, and I'm memorizing patterns using a book from the library and I've hit a road block. On some patterns the notation "1" or "1'" is used and I don't see this notation described anywhere in the book. Does anyone know what this means? I thought it could possibly be a lowercase L but this seems extremely unlikely. Thanks for any help.

Hm. I've never seen Notation used with numbers. Lowercase L's do exist, and it means do the normal L move (same direction as you normally would) only take the Middle layer with you.

base.gif
before move.
smalll.gif
after move. (assuming it's a l and not a l'). The most updated version of the 'official' notation would call this Lw now (uppercase with a w, instead of a lowercase)

I'm not sure if that's exactly what you'd be looking for, what's the title of the book?

It's called "Speedsolving The Cube" by Dan Harris. I think I'll try to get into a position to do one of these algorithms and see if "l" works. I doubt it will though because I really think it's a 1. Thanks for the help, though.

Also, another question I have is I've been wondering what method I'm learning because the book is a lille unclear on the subject. The method is four steps: Cross, F2L, OLL, PLL.

Compare the book against the web site for Dan Harris,
http://www.cubestation.co.uk/

Is the 1 part of a scramble notation, or is it used as an ID number, like G Permutation #1? Maybe it is intended to mark a footnote?

I thoroughly browsed that site and the best thing I could come up with was a notation glossary that didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. The 1 is part of a scramble notation. For example, in the OLL step for one of the W shapes the book says to perform: R' U' R U' R' U R U 1 U' R' U (x).

This brings up another less important question I had. Why is it necessary to rotate the cube after certain moves? What does that accomplish?

The 1's should be replaced with + signs to indicate that the algorithm comes in three parts. First you do the Permute Edges Clockwise algorithm, then a U2, and finally the Permute Edges Counter Cockwise algorithms.

rotating the cube is done so you can perform the moves faster. If you search for words like fingertrick (good) and regrip (bad) you will soon understand.

Example: Try doing R U R' U' 6 times. Now try doing B D B' D' 6 times. With cube rotations it's basically the same thing. So when you get a bad situation (many B and D-moves) you rotate the cube to gat a better situation

That's a lower case l, as Brett explained above.

Are you absolutely sure, because I'm thinking that can't be the case anymore. I looked through the book and found a move that used the lowercase l and it looked different than the 1. Before this I reached a point where I needed to use a "1" and I used l instead and it completely messed up the cube. I'm thinking I might just have to contact the author.

edit: oh now that I see Stachuk's post, things make more sense. Now, are all the 1s supposed to be replaced by +s or just the ones on that page?

In this example it is not a typo. The 1 is an l
R' U' R U' R' U R U l U' R' U (x) could also be written as
R' U' R U' R' U R U R B' R' B

It occurs on many pages actually. There are a lot of them in the OLL algorithms for the 3x3x3. I just took a look and I don't think they were all supposed to be +s because on pg.59 there is an algorithm with a 1 at the beginning and end of it and +s wouldn't make sense there.

It's so confusing.

edit: ok so it seems they are supposed to be ls, but that doesn't explain why when I tried one with l when it said 1 I got a messed up cube. I also don't see why the author would only use a 1 sometimes to describe an l movement when other times he just uses an l. For example, to anyone who has the book he has ls on pg.116, and there are 1s on pp.53, 59, 61-63, 65, etc. It's all really aggravating, and I wish I could just have one of the conditions that require the "1" movement so I can test it again.

I know I'm late on this but I have the same book as you and the 1's you are referring to are suppose to be +'s. It's a misprint of page 31.

sounds to me like whoever edited this book should be fired.

Yes, I agree. The editor should've gotten fired. Or maybe the editor isn't a cuber?
