[Unofficial] V Cube 3 First Impressions/Review

I saw the video and based on that I ordered two V-Cube 3 products from the V-Cubes site. A black V3 and a white V3b.

Total cost for the two was $58.38 AUD. Makes each cube $29.19 AUD, which is rather expensive for a 3x3x3 here in Australia.

The shipping and handling cost was $18.90 AUD and there was a "processing fee" of $1.70 AUD.

Order was made at 03/02/2012 and delivery is expected on 13/02/2012.

Mine arrived today. I ordered a white diy and a black diy.
The black bag was missing 15 things.
6 screws
6 center caps
1 set of green stickers
2 sets of orange stickers.

As for the white one, it's not the worst cube I own but it's not the best either.

Let V-Cubes know. I'm sure they will send you the missing components right away.

Actually, my cubic and pillowed both have torpedoes. The edge resembles a less refined guhong. The pillowed is incredible smooth whereas the cubic is kind of tight even after playing with adjustments many times. It will take some getting worked in.

Jumping to conclusions FTW. I'm glad I didn't bother ordering one after my initial impressions from the DIY bag.

Wow, those pieces are really similar to a Guhong. Doesn't look very good compared to Dayan cubes though, I think I'll stick with my Zhanchi.

Well Dayan was infringing on the V-Cube patents. I guess they made an agreement and V-Cube got to use some of the Dayan improvements as well.

AFAIK Verdes never took "Dayan" to court to claim a patent infringement (in Taiwan?). I'm just speculating, but I really doubt that Verdes made an agreement with "Dayan" to copy parts of their design. It's not that surprising that the cubes appear to be similar given that it's been alleged that they're both based on the description within Verdes' patent. That, and there's only so many variations of a corner and edge piece that you can make.

Just saying, conical cuts are not invented by V-Cubes. They have no right to claim the design as their own, yet they shamelessly included it in their patent.

Plus, DaYan was the first to actually use conical cuts in the 3x3x3, V-Cube's original idea of a 3x3 (according to the patent drawing) was the incredibly ineffective "winged" design. Their freedom to use a different design for the final product is completely irrelavent here.

It cannot be determined whether either of the two independently came up with the idea of using conical cuts in the 3x3x3 cube.
Maybe it's like Newton and Leibniz, they both came up with the idea of modern calculus on their own, just the matter of who revealed it first.

In my opinion, even if DaYan did "copy" V-cube's design, they at least put a lot of effort into perfecting the design as well as adding lots of innovative ideas in the final product. The Dayan Guhong is more than just conical cuts, you know; the usage of interior curvature is what accounts for the crazy foward and reverse corner-cutting.

V-cubes, on the other hand, are lazier than Porsche designers.

PS:
An interesting thing to note -- DaYan, too, used the winged design in the ZhanChi. Though much more subtle, it is definitely the same idea as the original V-Cubes 3x3

PS2: V-Cubes DEFINITELY ripped the torpedos design off DaYan. Case closed for this one.

So when are v-cube 4's coming out? Because I'm sure they'll copy dayan again. Or Shengshou.

Dayan's 4x4 design is just a regular ball core design (from Rubik's) with a 2x2 inside the ball core. V-Cubes won't copy that.

Why should an inventor release their design to a commercial world when an innovator will simply copy it? Any commercial incentive for an inventor is gone when somebody copies their design and they've no way of protecting it. Should people just improve puzzle designs for the sake of enthusiasts at a commercial loss?

Why do people that copy try to prevent others from copying?

That's why I said "even if", because at this instance I'm only comparing the sincerity between the two.

By no means am I justifying any form of intellectual theft.

And if you ask me, personally I believe that a) DaYan came up with the idea of applying conical cuts in 3x3s on their own, and b) it is more or less likely that V-cubes is mad that they didn't think of applying this to the 3x3 before, so with green-eyed envy they lash out at DaYan for being smarter than they are.

Also, I'm 99.99% certain that V-Cube DID NOT come up with the torpedos on their own.

V3 problems

Hey guys, I just purchased each factory-assembled version of the V3 and the two pillowed ones were fantastic. But the standard cubes appear to be faulty. They lock up all the time due to corner caps that have been glued in way too low, which causes large lips. Also, only 7 out of a possible 12 torpedos were in it. Has anyone else had these problems? I mean, it's so frustrating to use that I have had to mod it big time just to make it useable!

I took all the torpedoes out my DIY version because one broke and it was locking like a mother. It's much better without them. Hopefully the edges aren't glued on the non -DIY version.

One good thing about the V-Cube 3 white:
The cube is actually white. I never noticed how off-white my Dayans were until I got the V-cube 3.

It's hard to explain, but off-white makes the sticker shades look different. I put V-Cube stickers on a Dayan and the shade of white makes them look very different.

I let them know 3 days ago. Nothing yet. I used the website contact form. Maybe I'll try Facebook next :)
