I'm not sure, but my guess is that "bulge" keeps the whole thing from falling apart when rotated along its shortest axis.

The "weird" thing in the middle is because of the spherical nature if the internal mechanisme on the V-cube 7.

It's a really cool mod. Looks very stable.
