Timmah's Target - Sub 1 minute

Another PB today! I'm knocking on that sub 50 second mark!!

My look ahead is my biggest weakness, and finishing yellow layer corners. I have the technique for corners down, it's just that sometimes I overshoot a move and don't realise. That borks everything and I have to reorient middle layer again before finishing. However, it does mean I can now finish with either white on yellow on top with no issues so.... I'm kind of colour neutral to some degree? ;) :D

Nice! Seems like you and Max Park are on the same wavelength, it's a good day for PB's!

I would say don't worry about lookahead until you are sub 20 even, thinking about it may be slowing you down a bit. but those are my thoughts. keep up the good work!!

Ok so I haven't started doing 'official' scrambles yet (should I?) just randomly scrambling and solving. Got a PB last night of 1:09. Considering my original target was sub one minute, I'm glad I'm almost getting it in single solves.

Some more data, just for record keeping purposes :D

Older averages:

16/4 5.75 mins
17/4 7 mins
18/4 5.8 mins
19/4 3.5 mins
21/4 2.89 mins
22/4 2.41 mins
23/4 2.44 mins
24/4 2.84 mins
25/4 1.98 mins
26/4 2.17 mins
27/4 2.03 mins

congrats!
keep going at the passe your going and you will have achieved your goals.

Thanks mate! If I can hit that low without look ahead I’m all for that :D

I average 15 seconds and i'm just now starting to really focus on lookeahead. i got to around 20 seconds with minimal effort in lookeahead. it did help once i got better at it, but even now i struggle a lot, so i can easily average 18 seconds now that i have started to really make an effort looking ahead, primarily in F2L. The biggest thing to watch out for is try not to develop the habit of cube rotations during f2l, when you get around to learning it. I do too many, so have struggled with doing rear inserts for f2l. Just a few pointers to think about.

Hello! It's a been a while I know. Some female troubles and starting a new job slowed down my progress for a while. But all good now.

anyway, update! I plateaued with an average of around 70 seconds with my weird solving combination between beginner and CFOP. I hit 49 seconds a couple of times, but mostly around 60 seconds.

I've been learning 2 look OLL and PLL, and have concentrated more on my F2L as its still taking the most amount of time. Over my Christmas Holidays I'll use CS timer to break down how long each step is taking me at work from there to get my average under 60 seconds.

Then.... on to 2x2? ;)

A bit of an update!

So still using 2 look OLL/PLL I’ve managed to shave some more time off. Average under 60 seconds so… GOAL REACHED!!

That 42second solve was a really lucky combo of F2L and the OLL also solved PLL :p. Was by accident rather than me knowing it would occur haha.

EDIT
so I didn’t realise that 42 was me accidentally starting and stopping the timer. ACTUAL best is 43 and a bit seconds.

I’m not stopping though. Next target. Sub 30 average. To get there I’ll improve my F2L (how the F… people look ahead F2L cases is still a wonderful mystery to me) and learn the OLL solves for what I call the crazy turtle and munted shapes, rather than needing to do R U R’ U2 R U’ to get to one of the shapes I already know.

Knocked a second and a bit off my PB today! And found this section of my app. I like how it shows my solve times tightening up as time goes on. I just need them to DROP now :D

I’ve seen this app before. Just bear in mind that if you try to learn some algorithms from this app, you’ll probably encounter a lot of wrong algs. At least, that’s what many reviews for this app say. Just a heads up :).

Thanks for the tip! I've not used its Alg trainer yet but will keep that in mind :)

So like most people, F2L is my slowest part of CFOP. And I have no intention (at this stage!) of learning a bajillion algorithms. So how can I speed up F2L?

I'm pretty quick at solving pairs once I see them, but finding them for me is hard. Look ahead isn't my strong suit, and because I'm not looking for record breaking times, I don't feel it's important for me. I just needed something to speed up finding pairs.

I came across The Cuber and Zeta slotting today. For where I am now, this is the perfect method for speeding up my F2L. A few quick scrambles and even me not knowing it well, I'm faster than normal at finishing F2L.

For those that aren't familiar, here is the tutorial. Not so great for advanced people, but really good for us intermediate peeps!

What is the average move count with the Zeta intermediate method?

I see where you’re going with this, but trust me: normal F2L is faster in every way. The only thing I see this help with is Last slot, but in a 2 gen situation. I know you don’t want to learn F2L algs, but you don’t even need to learn a bajillion algs to be fast. Just getting used to seeing the cases and not looking at the pair you’re solving helps with the lookahead. The F2L cases should be executed like an algorithm, but only because you’ve seen the case so many times you know how to solve it.
And some lookahead techniques that could help are EO, back slot inserts, and back slot deduction. When I get the time I’ll link vids for those and how they can be used to help with lookahead.
