A thread to discuss about the future of WCA competitions, be it future records, future events, future event removals (Clock, we see you), future comps, etc.

#FTOforWCA #KilominxforWCA

Ok, let me start off with the amount of WCA events
We have 17 events which is quite a lot if you think about it.
All the NxN's up until 7x7 (except 1x1 lol), Pyra and Skewb, Clock (I think clock is fine), Mega and Squan
There is also 3x3 OH and 3BLD, 4BLD and 5BLD
And MBLD and FMC
The last official WCA event that was added was Skewb in 2014
The last WCA event that was removed was 3x3 WF in 2019
So with events, there are a lot, but I think that we can add some more considering the fact that the WCA didn't add a new event yet in the past 10 years!!!
I'm not exactly sure but FTO is a pretty good option for an event as well as mirror blocks and Kilominx
Add like 1-2 more events maybe and I think that would be good for the WCA

Not Mirror Blocks, but I agree with FTO. Also not Kilominx, it is just simplified Megaminx.

mirror blocks and Kilomin
Mirror blocks os jst 3x3 and kilominx is jst 2x2 megaminx and I think the only event we should have spinoff of (like that event oh or bld) should be 3x3 since its the main event and the one most people know about

Another good event could be ch2 since its a face, corner, and edge turning puzzle and there isn't an edge turning puzzle in the wca yet

3x3 is overated

I feel like another good option could be the Curvy-Copter. We don't have any edge-turning puzzles in the WCA yet, and Helicopter Cube and Clover Cube are not as popular. It's a pretty hard and unique puzzle and it would also introduce jumbling to the WCA. With the addition of Curvy-Copter to the WCA catalog, there would also be way better hardware for it, and that's something we don't quite have rn. So overall, besides FTO and Kilominx, I think Curvy-Copter would be one of the best options. Mirror Blocks is just 3x3 tho, I agree that shape-mods shouldn't be official WCA events.

100% not. However that was for fun rather than anything serious and Diansheng just came out with a magnetic kilominx.
oh lol, it’s just that in that vid where your friend had to like guess what different puzzles were, you were like, “this is a kilominx” I was like, really? Thx for telling me about the diansheng, I should check that out.

When the WCA (suddenly) added skewb in 2014, there were some significant problems.

Delegates were not consulted on what it would mean, meaning many delegates were annoyed, and that’s really not a good start.
While skewb was undeniably popular, the lack of consultation between the WCA and ROs and delegates, led to friction.
The main reason there was no consultation was simply that the WCA had no benchmark; they didn’t know how to add a new event simply because they’d never added a new event before, and they added it pretty badly in the eyes of many people.

If the WCA adds a new event, first delegates and ROs need to be consulted. I believe that submissions should also be open for the general community to contribute their ideas on it, the proposed event needs to undergo a trial period as an event offered at select competitions, so we can see if it really should be added, and of course be publicly announced.

Lastly, the WRC will have to write this event into the regulations, which could take months potentially. Many events are reliant on a regulation being worded in a particular way. Large parts of the regulations may need to be rewritten to solve this issue.

The comments about delegates not being consulted are based on remarks from Kit Clement during an interview on whether FTO should be added to the WCA. A delegate such as @Tabe may be able to comment further on the needs of delegates.
