The Best Smartcube?! Moyu Weilong 2021 AI Cube with Magnet Adjustment (DSM)

I use it, I have over a dozen Gan cubes, and probably somewhere around 60-70 3x3's. Year doesn't matter, I have no allusions of being a speedcuber who's going to challenge Felix or Max and bust out some sub 5 solve time.

I solve cubes and puzzles because they're fun. Like most I want to be sub 20 but I was happy when I started being consistently under 1 minute. Lol.

Puzzles and cubes are just fun to use and collect.

I've even grown fond of **Gasp!** my V-Cubes!! (some more than others, the 6x6 has broken in really nicely) .. I even ordered the V-Sphere because 'why not'?,.. I have all the others.

:D
Age should not be a problem, it's the performance, cubes or people. I will be happy to try it and maybe suggest it to my older friends starting to cube, or any new cube that has the same stronger magnets and adjustability. I have not bought any Gan as yet, but It looks like I will very soon. Until I can figure out how it is like and read some more reviews, the much cheaper and wonderfully smooth and quiet 72g Tornado V2 is what I recommend to them, and for an all-round, really useful and nice quality adjustable and smart speedcube, if an older person wants to get serious and pay ~$90 USD for it (cost for the 2 cubes and postage), the DSM here is it. I don't think I am biased. It is the best smartcube at this time. Very happy. The more I use it, the harder it is to put it down or use the others (GoCube, Tengyun M, RS3M 2020, Tornado V2 or the WRM).

Yes, I am discovering this aspect of cubing, the collecting and buying, experimenting and endless discussions, video watching, ... ... I might have to find a cupboard just for cubes soon.

the Amazon link is the exact one I bought, and the magnets are the strongest (out of the box) of any Gan I own. And I own the stickered version and stickerless version and they're both identical in that regard. The magnets are so strong they 'click' when they pass each other. You can hear it in that video.
Thanks for the info. I have just found that the GAN X V2 weighs 80 or 81g, depending on which site I went to. It is not exactly light.

UPDATE #2. FINAL THOUGHTS.

After another day of play and comparisons, I can say for sure that there are no downsides with the mod. I added 2 drops of lube near the outer perimeter, and put stickers on the rest of the cube, and it still is 83g. Apart from those 3g, which are not noticeable, everything else is either the same or better than the stock standard AI Cube. Charging time is almost always 1 hour 20min and it can be played for 4 hours or so, depending on how fast and and how many solves you can do, since the battery is run down whenever it is used or turned, even if you are not connected to any software (the Bluetooth pairing mode is turned on by turning). It's great to be able to check the averages, stats for step times, etc, which are all kept automatically by Cubeast. For normal practise, I use the cube as timer (no need to press anything to start the timer). Cubeast detects the turning and starts the clock, and it also detects when the cube is solved, to stop it. I also select Self-Scramble, for convenience. I haven't tried the Moyu app after the initial experiences. I will give it a couple more months and hope there is a significant update first.

Back to the cube itself, it feels very nice and easy to turn after I loosened the spring compression a little bit and added 2 drops of lube to the pieces, away from the core, the first time I did this since I first lubricated it 4 weeks ago. This may well be the best cube at this time, smart or not, if you consider that it has so much, the overall quality, features, turning performance, smart functions, all in a single cube. With the added magnet adjustments, there is nothing missing or any significant problem in this cube, even though there are cubes that may be better in specific measurements or functions. I now wish there is a black version of the WRM2021 with bright colour stickers, so that I can use the pieces from it for this mod. I don't like the dark and dull colours on the black RS3M 2020. Colours like what's on the black Tengyun M suits me much better.

If there is anyone from Moyu reading, I would like to say, Well done! Excellent job on your first AI Cube, but release a model just like this one here, and enhance a couple of minor things to make it the smartcube of choice for everyone. Make it silky smooth and less clicky (using something to reduce friction, like the honeycomb pattern on inside surfaces of GAN cube pieces, or the concentric circle patterns on the inside of Tornado V2's corner pieces. Also, as mentioned previously, keep the 55mm size for future models, and standardise on the same size and shape for the core, all the pieces, centre caps, to start an eco-system for the enthusiasts. (I think someone will, if Moyu doesn't do this, and Moyu is in the leading position to do so as my project has shown, since it has several models already using parts with the same shape and size.) This should be also good for business to containing costs through common parts and scale of economy, as good cube prices start to come down, and for attracting more buyers and expanding. Flexibility like the ability for users to put in a costly smart core later to an existing flagship cube would be very much appreciated, same as for putting in it some new updated super lightweight cube pieces that are released after the first year into an expensive flagship cube, or swap in an even more advanced core in future when a bigger battery or faster processor is available, etc. In other words, lets have upgradability. Consumers are more likely to buy into brands and also to spend more in products that have this. Lastly make the app better and please use English that non-Chinese can understand. Thank you.

man,.. it sneaks up on you!,.. it really does. They're everywhere around here... plus I have probably another dozen in the mail on the way. Just ordered the V-Cube 9x9 and V-sphere direct from V-cube in Greece, a Mastermorphix and Curvy Copter should be delivered today.
Three vintage rubiks (one in a sealed package, one anniversary edition from 2005, and a Cisco-branded one from the 80's), A Calvins Cross, a Tony Fisher 'ball in a cube', A Siamese cube, another transparent Yuxin Kylin 3x3 (tiled and translucent-very cool!, .... it's totally addicting collecting cubes. One cube has turned into dozens and dozens.. and there's still more I want, I really like trying new cubes and just adding more to the collection I guess.

and it all started with just one single regular Rubiks 3x3 that was translucent that I bought just because it looked cool,.. then I got annoyed when I scrambled it and couldn't figure out how to solve it. And down the rabbit-hole I went.

my desk ( I use Godzilla mouse mats as cube mats. They work great! I'm a huge Godzilla fan with Godzilla merch that rivals my cube collecting.)

20210901_104231.jpg

that entire storage container the cases are sitting on is stuffed with cubes, big cubes, and *minxes

20210901_104059.jpg

Running out of room on my bookshelf.. the translucent one on the left on the orange stand was my first cube that started all this. (not counting the regular Rubiks I had decades ago as a kid.)

If you get the collecting bug I'd like to say, "Welcome to the Club!"

:D

and even the table next to my bed has them.

My wife so far is tolerant but I don't know how long that will last. Lol

I should probably get a China Cabinet or something big to put them all in and keep them all in one spot instead of all over.

Older cubes tend to be heavier and more solid feeling in my experience, which can be a plus depending on your turn style. I wonder if any cube manufacturer will try to release a heavier cube nowadays.

that's why I like the Valk, it's not heavy but it has that solid 'clacky' feel to it. Whenever I go from using solid clacky cubes to really light ones like the Gan Air, it always feels weird and there's a slight adjustment time to get used to it. They feel so light and hollow I have to lighten up my turning style a lot.

I like both styles though depending on my mood. The more solid cubes don't feel so light and fragile, I enjoy the tank-like solid feel of them.

It's been 5 months since I wrote the original review of this Moyu AI Cube with pieces from the Moyu Weilong 2021. See the first post of this thread. I can now confirm that there is no downside to this modification and it is still very satisfying to use.

Since then, I have finally bought a Gan cube, the Mini M Pro and also a Diansheng Solar S3M, and I have read about all the Maglev cubes and cubes from some new brands, checked the reviews, but have not felt any urge to buy a new cube for the last few months. If anyone is looking for that perfect cube and wanting to stop having to buy yet another cube, and another after that, to chase that little bit extra feature/performance, then I say consider this one. ;)

IMO this is still best cube no matter the price. I am hoping that others can comment on this and also that Moyu can make something like this in 2022. The only improvement I think of is stronger magnets. For now, it's fine at the strongest setting of "1", but it would be nice to be able to have a more adjustable range. Why does Moyu insist on light magnets?

Good to see you back Dan, I wondered where you'd gone!
I'm lucky to have a fair few flagship cubes now. I keep wanting to see how they 'feel', I know at my level, hardware won't improve my times. But as I said, I like to see how they are. I like most of them a lot, for different reasons.
I now find myself waiting to see what's coming out next. Though I won't simply go and get everything that comes out, l still need to justify them and their cost.

and this brand new feature - spring loaded turning action so that once a layer starts to turn, it will snap in place after turning exactly 90 or (with more force) 180 degrees, ie it never under or over shoots.
Looks like you foretold the Gan12, almost. It does what you mention, only with magnets, not springs..
I was lucky to score a 12 second hand, barely used. I must say, I like it a lot.

Great for you! Finding a cube that suits one's particular style and preferences really well can be so hard, and costly.

Shawn apparently likes the idea. He has also put the Moyu Weilong 2021 pieces on to this AI cube.

Have a look. His Moyu AI cube also has the corner magnet adjustment system. :D

After not using this cube for at least half a year, I found today that it could not be charged. I tried switching to the D position several times, separately, to try to wake it up, but it still could not be charged. Worse, after plugging in the USB cable in and out of the Moyu charger many times as I tried to charge it, the USB socket came off. See photos.

I opened the charger to have a look. This little part has 4 little legs that seemed to clip onto 4 holes on the circuit board inside the charger. There was no sign of any solder near those hole. Be careful if you own this Moyu AI Cube. It's best to have a USB cable permanently plugged into the charger to prevent too many pushing and pulling of the cable.

This is sad developement.

One way in which MoYu can improve their product is to have spare cables and connectors.

Having the USB cable permanently plugged in should not be a solution.

Also some spare 3x3 parts too like spring magnet, 1/3 corner stock, 1/2 edge stock, center caps etc.

I just bought the cube and like its speed. But the magnets were also too weak for me.
So I also tried this mod. I think with a WRM 2021 but I'm nor 100% sure because I have different WRM Cubes.
I felt a little bad, putting the old, worn, dirty pieces on my brand new smartcube but it worked.

After doing this I directly made a Sub 20 solve which is still a very good time for me 😜

Does the original Software still work for you? I know it's bad and I use cubeast anyway but i couldn't even download it.
My iPhone tells me "This software is not available in your region"

After a few solves I must say:

I LOVE IT!

With your mod it feels exactly like my MoYu Weilong WRM which was my Main Cube for a long Time and still ist one of my favorites.

The software worked to some extent. It's buggy. I use an Android phone. The software has not been improved or updated apparently.

Be very careful with the USB connector of the charger. Also do not use too much lubricant and definitely not water based ones. I am already on my third one, and that's because it is really good in performance but the hardware is fragile and it's not just the charger. Both the two older cubes died (not responsive or not working with either Cubeast or the Moyu software.

I also use a Gan ICarry S, simply because a Gan smartcube is necessary to use the Gan Robot. Moyu seems happy to let Gan take the lead and take the "smart" market by doing nothing and have no products for 2 years. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This Moyu Weilong AI Cube is apparently not supported by the brand new Moyu app. The old app has never been any good, even if usable somehow, and it has not been updated. Due to this and the flimpsy charger problem I mentioned in an earlier post, I do not recommend this smartcube now.
