The Best Smartcube?! Moyu Weilong 2021 AI Cube with Magnet Adjustment (DSM)

The Moyu AI Cube does not have a magnet strength adjustment system, but the Moyu Weilong WRM 2021 does. The sizes and colours of the two cubes are practically speaking identical. So I swapped their pieces and got this. I did not swap the centre caps. Does it work? Yes, everything including the smart features worked as before. The main difference is that the smartcube gained 2g or at most 3g (with some stickers). The normal AI Cube weighs 80g. The enhanced smartcube feels about the same as before. Its magnet strength was a little too weak for me before but I can adjust it now. I set it to the strongest "1" setting and it seems better, fine, now. It also seems a little bit quieter now.

The Moyu WRM 2021 is now essentially just a Moyu WRM 2020, without the magnet adjustment system. Still a good cube, and so similar in feel, so it's fine as a backup or for when a smartcube is not needed, or when it's being re-charged, or when it's not allowed (like in comps). Updates later after more use.

is the performance better?
To answer your query, I think it's best to check others' reviews of the WRM 2021 and how it compares with the WRM 2020. I am not a good judge as I cannot turn fast or use much corner cutting. The pieces of the AICube (before the swap) were just like what the regular WRM 2020 has.

UPDATE #1.

WARNING, TIPS, UPDATE & ANOTHER CUSTOMISATION IDEA

Do this at your own risk, but it should be straightforward and risks are minimal. I suggest wiping the pieces from the WRM 2021 first if they are wet with lube, before putting in the smartcube, as there are electronics and battery inside the AI's core. See my review of the Moyu AI Cube in another thread about this and other warnings, eg. use of water or alcohol based lube, and proper charging. That review is here:

After a morning of play, I can confirm that it works very well. There is no problem whatsoever. Performance is IMO at least as good as before, and likely to be slightly better. It feels a little smoother and more premium after the mod. Remember I mentioned some minor cosmetic imperfections with the surface of the smartcube's pieces in my original review of that cube? The new pieces from the WRM 2021 fixed that. Anyone concerned with performance can relax, and remember that all these Moyu cubes are flagship grade products. It's nice to be able to adjust magnet strength on this modified AI Cube now, and after some experimentation, I still have it set to the strongest setting of "1", which is fine for me. Moyu cubes seem to have weak magnets, which I know suit many fast cubers, but I am glad I can adjust it now on this cube.

The question I kept asking myself this morning is - Why didn't Moyu release this instead? If they did, they would be able to claim to have released the first ever smartcube with magnetic adjustment, and also the best smartcube.

Another thought is - Wouldn't it be nice if Moyu continue to release some of their best 3x3 cubes with the exact same size for the cores and pieces, same shapes and colours of the centre pieces/caps, so that we have a "system". It will encourage purchases of their products, while allowing consumers to have some fun, to mix and match, customise, and perhaps also protect their investment as cubes and smartcube get more expensive.

Here's one more idea. Those who love stickered black cubes may want to investigate this. I think it should be possible to swap pieces from a black Moyu WRM 2020, to get the world's first and only black smartcube. :D This assumes that the WRM 2020's magnet strength is fine with you and does not need adjustment. Do check the size of the pieces first though.

If anyone else make the same modification for the Moyu AI Cube, please post here and let us know how you like it. May I suggest this name for it, to save time and confusion - DSM (for Dan's Special Mod). ;) :D

I think Moyu may release their own version of this. They made a smart move with the swappable cores. Maybe we'll see the era of combining cubes again!

Also welcome to the world of puzzle modding? :p

Thanks. It's another aspect of cubing fun I discovered, not unlike other "cool" things I have done while younger, hot rodding, overclocking, lens mount mods.:D

I suspect Moyu will be well rewarded with many purchases if they act quick and become the first to make a move. It's sort of like camera lens mountd system. Canon was so successful , they monopolised the camera market, and one reason is that they manage to lock in numerous camera owners to the brand. With most people cubers owning so many cubes after a while, it looks such a waste if they cannot re-use some of them and get more value out of their money. I definitely will be more willing to pay more to buy a particular brands product, and also buying higher-end products, if it is part of a system.

No, I mean on other places such as YT because your very good. (See my edited post)
And then receive free cubes? or a customised cube made with a Dan logo? :D Hmm... I think independent and honest user (or buyer) reviews are why forums are so useful and the best. YT is a different, and lots of other things like personality, marketing/promotion, sponsorship (giving freebies to viewers, and getting frequent and regular reviews published, which means a deep pocket and lots of pressure, time, making video, liaising or monitoring comments, and/or dealing with relational matters). That would be too hard for someone retired for more than 10 years. I do have many ideas and I wish to share as and when I am ready, and when I can afford a new cube. Thanks.

One idea is promoting cubing to sensor citizens, to kill time, provide casual challenges and mind exercise, to help bonding with grandchildren, or just to enjoy cubing (rather than break time records), which is why I came up with the idea for DBR, my Roux like and very intuitive method using less than 10 algorithms (counting right and left hand versions as one). Try giving a cube to a granny next time, if anyone cannot think of a good present. BTW, I am still trying to get a cube maker to make a suitable model for more mature cubers, i.e. with a strong and deep yellow colour that is easy to distinguish from White in weak light. I hope some how this glaring need is noticed.

I make YT videos and I have no plans to be sponsored. I do it for fun and like the idea of being independent of sponsored ads or pressure to make videos.

heh, ... a Dan Gan
OK. A cube designed for us oldies. Mustard yellow colour, cold Icy White, extra stable design, extra light, strong magnets and this brand new feature - spring loaded turning action so that once a layer starts to turn, it will snap in place after turning exactly 90 or (with more force) 180 degrees, ie it never under or over shoots. And, an optional beep or vibration if we should doze off, detected if there's no motion after 3 minutes during a solve and the cube is not level.

you know in a lot of ways that pretty much describes this one... (Gan 356x)

very light with extremely strong magnets, so strong they make a clicking noise when you rotate the sides..

Edited. See the part in bold below.

Thanks, sounds interesting. Being a stickered cube, the yellow should be better and i can replace it with my own yellow sticker. It weighs 68g. Correction. I checked and found that the GAN X V2's weight is 80 or 81g. The one that weighs 68g is the GAN XS, not this one. So, it is a bit too heavy (and also slightly big for me). I wonder how its magnet strength compares with the Tornado V2 (72g), which i like very much and one reason is the strong magnets. The link you provided is for Gan X V2. Is it the same in magnet strength as the Gan X recommended?

the Amazon link is the exact one I bought, and the magnets are the strongest (out of the box) of any Gan I own. And I own the stickered version and stickerless version and they're both identical in that regard. The magnets are so strong they 'click' when they pass each other. You can hear it in that video.

I don't think that anyone would use this cube as it is from 2018

I use it, I have over a dozen Gan cubes, and probably somewhere around 60-70 3x3's. Year doesn't matter, I have no allusions of being a speedcuber who's going to challenge Felix or Max and bust out some sub 5 solve time.

I solve cubes and puzzles because they're fun. Like most I want to be sub 20 but I was happy when I started being consistently under 1 minute. Lol.

Puzzles and cubes are just fun to use and collect.

I've even grown fond of **Gasp!** my V-Cubes!! (some more than others, the 6x6 has broken in really nicely) .. I even ordered the V-Sphere because 'why not'?,.. I have all the others.

:D
