The 3x3x3 Example Solve Thread

The highligted U moves are all AUF at OLL / PLL stage and do not do anything apart from adding moves in your written solution.
For FMC (as the OP was adding the movecount) you would do U' F U R U' R' F' as L U F U' F' L'
I understand people do this in speedsolving as U turns are fatser than cube rotations but for FMC turning the whole cube is the way to go

Corners twists are best handled via insertions, solving them via 2 3-cycles.
Irontwig made a nice post a while ago showing that a 2-twist can be solves in about 8 moves this way.

Check this for an example solve by Irontwig:

Oh, they were just aufs? I was thinking about rearranging algs and such...

could even be better with a 3 cycle insertion for the A perm...

Wow, cubenovice... those are some interesting solutions.
Is there a technique that you use that lets you cancel after every step? Or is that something to do with the actually human thistlethwaite method?

Edit: I'll probably finish off my last solution then do your scramble after attempting blindfolded a couple more times...

A little bit of both.

B2 D L2 B' (EO)
U2 D L' B2 (edges + set up)
B U2 B' U' B U' B D2 B2 (sune solves corners) this is not my speedsolving sune
B L' B R2 B' L B R2 B2 (A perm to pair up corners) Both directions of A perm pair the corners, I just chose the one that cancels.
D L2 D L2 R2 U' R2 D2 (fix bad edges)
D' U F2 U' D R2 (Equator edges) you can also solve this 3-cycle via F2 U' D R2 D' U...
or the following three versions of the D' U F2 U' D R2 alg I used:
U D' F2 U' D R2 or U F2 U' D R2 D' or D' F2 U' D R2 U where you play with the order of moves

R2 F2 R2 F2 R2 F2 (edge pair swap) you can also start with F2 and end on R2

So the "technique" is knowing and trying multiple algs.

The "something" about the HTA method is the kind of algs / commutators you need, many of them can be done in multiple ways with identical move count.
As shown in the example above: at the step "pair up corners" you can apply left and right A-perms and the same goes for the Ortega algs for the other cases. But with these algs choosing L or R versions will influence the number of bad edges you'll have to fix in the next step.

There are also quite a few edge "algs" where you can just shift the first/last move: 3-cycles, 4-movers and 6- movers

Then there are a lot of moves along the same axis which allows you to switch these moves in your write up.

All this stuff helps in finding some cancellations.
In real FMC mode I would definately try to insert the E slice edg cycle and the A-perm.

Hm... very interesting indeed. I will look up human thistlethwaite, and fewest move techniques, although there isn't much detail on the wiki...

And moves on the same axis... Yah I got you there.

But shifting first/last moves? I guess I'll just need to know some that do the trick. For you, you seem to adapt the algs to suit the solution. Or do you come up with them on the spot...?

Really? I would consider any scramble "stupid" if it repeats anything more than once (and yours repeats 3 times)

Give a normal scramble...

anyway, providing my own:

FMC is a very cool event and good for your overall cube-understanding!

Blockbuilding with comm finish is typically the way to go for FMC but I am currently exploring the potential /limits for HTA.

But shifting first/last moves? I guess I'll just need to know some that do the trick. For you, you seem to adapt the algs to suit the solution. Or do you come up with them on the spot...?

Shifting first/last moves: works very wel for edge moves, so perhaps there are some in Roux?
I try to adapt algs as much as possible indeed. Since I do not know many I have to...

Thanks; I'll be reading!
As for corner twists... Cancelling 6 moves sounds crazy... But I kinda see how.

I'll give it another shot (And maybe finish off the other one :D) later today...

In Roux we do have many ways of doing so in mooing, and blocks are basically like any other blockbuilding... Almost unlimited freedom.

However, for CMLLs, it's a bit difficult, as I find with ANY corner 'algs'.

Edit: I am now doing the scramble. Gonna try fewest moves... Hope it works.
I will be doing HTM, and not STM, so will avoid slices.

hm... let's try some insertions...

now to insert the last few corners... for this I'll revert back to normal scramble to see if I can cancel moves there, too.

You definately failed it but don't worry.
You're trying something different that that's always a good thing!

I had a quick look at your 1st block: did I see some CFOP habits?
If you want to build blocks: have a look around if there are some pieces of blocks already available.

You've got:
- white center paired with white-red edge
- a white-red corner edge pair
let's bring them together :
shortest way: B R' already makes a square
best way: B D R B U' makes the 2x2x2 block, the D move brings the blue-red edge along the blue center so you have all compontents of the 2x2x2 ready

-

Here's another fail solve:
R F' L2 R' B R (EO) 6
R D2 R2 D' R2 D' R2 D2 R (CO) 14
L F U F' U' F U F' U' F U F' U' L' (worst CO) 28
D' R2 (separate corners) 30
B2 D B2 D2 L2 D L2 (pair up corners) 37
U' L2 U' L2 R2 D' R2 (fix bad edges) 44
D2 R U2 R2 U2 R2 U2 R (lasr 4 edges) 52

linear HTA without optimizing for corner orientation = fail HTM

Not bad for my second FMC though. It took me eight minutes btw.
