The way I see it is this. The average AI prompt uses just a few milliliters of water. I can accidentally drink that much by filling up a cup of water for just a fraction of a second longer.

It's not even "using" water anyway because the water isn't going anywhere. The water is just being used to cool down the computers in data centers. It's actually very similar to how water is used in nuclear power plants. Ideally, the hot water would be dumped into reservoirs made for the data centers where it could naturally cool off without harming the environment.

There’s a lot of misinformation circulating around the internet about AI water usage. I haven’t been able to fully come to a definitive answer to what the whole “AI is wasting all the water” thing is about, but the best answer I came to is: AI is pulling fresh water from aquifers and using it in ways that will result in less available fresh water.

And anyway, AI data centers are less than 1% of the electricity generation on the entire planet, so the whole argument is stupid and it’s just a way for anti-AI people to defame AI because there’s an alarmingly large amount of people on the internet that don’t check sources or care to properly understand anything, and they regurgitate the loudest facts and opinions regardless of whether or not it could be right or wrong.*

(*) One time online I saw someone get shut down by 2 people for having a pro-AI opinion. One of them wrote “Ai is poisoning the water” and the other wrote “the water you drink will be gone in a few years because of AI” 🙄
