It's not exactly solving it from any possible last slot case, but instead he's inserting the F2L pair with the edge flipped. It's significantly fewer algs, still likely thousands, but I don't know the exact math for it. But if I'm right, it's just 1LLL and solving the flipped F2L edge, and that might just be the exact same as full 1LLL, so another almost 4,000 algs.
Regardless, he is actually insane with alg learning, and even just saying he's ONLY learning the equivalent of 1LLL again is crazy to think about.

It’s actually crazy how fast his alg learning is, I wonder if he’ll learn something like 2x2 or Squan. For reference, a year ago he learnt Megaminx 2LLL and this is how fast he learnt it:

PLL: ~18 hours aggregated, 3 consecutive days. (160 algs(?), ~8.88 algs/hour(?))
OLL: ~14 hours aggregated, 2 consecutive days. (151 algs(?), ~10.79 algs/hour(?))
Full 2LLL, 329/329, ~32 hours aggregated, 5 consecutive days. (329 algs, ~10.28 algs/hour)
