solving first layer as the bottom

I've noticed from a lot of tutorials and vids that everyone seems to solve their first layer to the bottom. I assume this is to maximize visibility of the unsolved pieces and to avoid a regrip when solving the LL. I've always solved the first layer in my left hand (I'm right handed) as the moves just feel more comfortable that way.

Currently I'm working on learning 4LLL averaging about 55 seconds. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm crippling my F2L speeds with how I'm used to holding the cube....or if I shouldn't worry about it at this skill level yet.

I'm using the same algorithms I see others using...just flipped on their side. Currently it's painstaking to force myself to put my first layer to the bottom in the times I've tried it out. Just looking for any advice out there.

Thanks.

Yes, solving cross on the bottom is done for the exact reasons you stated. However, though it is a minority, solving with the cross on the left (or right) can be fast as well. You're not holding yourself back.
