62 years old, and I first tried cubing in the early 1980s when it was all the craze in the U.S. After a few frustrating attempts, I gave up altogether - please remember at that time there was no internet, no YouTube and very limited means to glean info. Very few people owned a personal computer, and even less knew what to do with it.
After 23 years of being a professional tattooer and doing various commissioned art projects, I retired from that scene and began a new profession as a personal assistant to a man who suffered a grievous brain injury. I noticed him often fiddling with a rubik’s brand cube, but only doing one side to completion. I decided to get myself one at Walmart and learn to solve it through YouTube videos, then teach him the method. I used the video sponsored by WIRED magazine, and over the first weekend of November 2019, I did it. That first solve felt so good, as many will agree. After those three days, my hands and wrists were pained, and I found this forum and decided I needed a speed cube. First one was a moyu gts3 m, then gan x, then gan xs, then dayan tengyun v2, and this weekend the gan 11 m pro soft texture. No pain unless I pick up a rubik’s brand, which has been relegated to a shelf ornament. So I reckon I’m hooked.
Unfortunately, the man I assist is highly resistant to even doing a cross. I try every day to motivate him, but to no avail, just that one side solved. He does it quickly, so I know he could learn if properly motivated and not so contrary. He has short term memory loss but I feel the discipline involved can only help his neural circuits. I have been working on my f2l for many months, but am resistant to learning 20 some oll and 50 some pll, although i know I should. I have even made a loose leaf binder of all the routines, but lack the motivation. Still I do 50 or so solves a day. I’m under a minute in time, and color neutral from day one.
I decided today to quit lurking, and hope to add where I can to this forum. Love, peace, and cube grease from Jeff in Illinois.
p.s. it’s really great to get paid to cube on the job!
