Rubik's Tetris simulator

I got different pieces. I guess it's a solution too.

How did you code this?

The idea is:

0. Pick a 3x3x3 cube
1. Define solved state
2. Apply random moves
3. (Optional) simulate stickerless cube
4. (Optional) add background color

Putting it all together:

Code:
[cube=3]facelets=gwmommbrmoobgkbyyrggowggmyymrrrrbbbbgobgoboobmyymyymrr&initmove=random&borderwidth=0&bgcolor=808080[/cube]

It's a pretty interesting puzzle. I solved it in about an hour.

The strategy I came up with is as follows:

I separated the pieces into the following 3 groups.
  • Group A: S, Z, O pieces
  • Group B: T piece
  • Group C: L, J pieces
Group A must contain one corner, Group B may contain zero or two corners, and Group C may contain one or two corners. In other words, it must contain a minimum of 6 corners (1+1+1+0+1+1 = 6) and a maximum of 9 corners (1+1+1+2+2+2 = 9).

Since a cube has 8 corners, I found that group A naturally needs to be positioned with one corner, group B needs to be positioned with two corners, and one group C needs to be positioned with one corner and the other needs to be positioned with two corners (1+1+1+2+2+1 = 8).

Taking this into consideration, I tried to position the pieces as tightly as possible, and got the result shown below, but the S and J pieces didn't fit properly.

After that, I moved the yellow O piece as shown below, and it worked.

It wasn't a particularly impressive strategy, so I think I just got lucky.

Now at the end of year and I don't have time, but I will try to check the number of possible solution some time in January.

That simulator looks like a fun challenge. I enjoy anything that makes you think differently and improves problem-solving skills. When I need a break from puzzles, I often visit Roobet Canada for a different kind of entertainment.

Can we calculate all the possible ways to fit those tetris pieces on the Tetris Cube?

It may be difficult to calculate it, at least I felt so when I tried to do it in my dream last night.

I think it shouldnt be too hard if you:

- brute-force every possibility for whole pieces to fit in the cube.
- have in mind some pieces might be composed of centers, corner or edge
- treat pieces as composed of cubies and not individual stickers

Your solution is not valid, sorry, because you didn´t preserve center pieces (magenta opposite black, orange opposite yellow, green opposite red).

It is a valid solution, though, in terms of Filipe´s question.

@bcube notice I talked about pieces being composed of corner, edges and/or center pieces. that imply it must be possible to solve in a Rubik's Cube like the one you described, with the sticker patterns.

I want to find all solutions programaticaly, not necessarily invalid cases (different center, edges, conrner configuration)

Oh, I didn't know that condition.
Let me try again.

Thanks for your insight. I will I'll take that into consideration.

This time I think I made it, didn't I?

I assumed that it would be easier if the center color of the cube was specified, since that would determine which side each piece (except for the Blue J, White, and Black) would be placed on, but in fact it was the opposite.

I am wondering: what is everybody's solving approach?

As for me, I am usually using either Corners-first or Edges-first method when solving Rubik's Cube modifications or sticker variations.

But here I am using the Tetris piece-by-piece approach in this order: T-O-Z-J-L-S.

I have just checked all patterns, using brute-force method, and found out that there was only one solution. Interesting.

As I mentioned earlier, I will try to find out the number of all possibilities without the condition “preserve center pieces”.

If the goal is modified to have each of 6 Tetris pieces once regardless of their color (thus simulating a physical cube without memorizing the colors for individual Tetris pieces), I found another solution with a different placement of pieces from already posted placement:
