If i recall correctly the WCA uses state recognition based on the UN, which considers Israel apart of Europe.
This is puzzling to me as even though culturally Israel may be closer to European traditions, it is geographically in Asia

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_geoscheme_for_Asia and the UN puts it in western Asia too

If we go by more fine-grained https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_geoscheme I'm sure Israelis would consider themselves in Middle East over Asia or Europe

I dont get it as well, but there is a precedence e.g. with Israel being member of UEFA.

Maybe it's just a geographic and political convenience.

Israel was actually a part of Asia for FIFA long time ago. Most of Asian countries banned Israel and did not show up due to the Arab ban on Israel.

Today Israel is represented under the European flag in Football, Basketball, Tennis, Olympics, Chess and even speedstacking.

It has mostly to do with good community, economics and political relations with European countries with conjunction of Israelis not welcomed to enter (to say the least) in countries that calls for its destruction such as Iran and Iraq in which their government direct them that they dont show up in matches like Chess or Judo, dont play our anthem etc. I really hope that would change though.

There were other precedence for it, you're welcome to check why Kazakhstan is also playing under European flag in Football ;)
