Okay so I finally figured it out then I don't know what happened I guess I lost it. But I cant seem to figure out this step. Its so confusing to understand whats orientating. Do all my U face colors have to be my U face color? Just confused on this step. Am fine with 4b and c because those are really easy. I got everything else ok.

EDIT: FYI am a very very new rubiks cube user. I have touched on the basics of CFOP. I average around 1:10 using lbl with some f2l in the beginning

Hey there. I'm a beginning roux user too, and maybe I can help.

Step 4a is edge orientation. The different cases of 4a (as seen here: http://grrroux.free.fr/method/Step_4.html) show the cube with purple cubies. The purple pieces represent pieces that are UNoriented, meaning that the U or D stickers DO NOT have U or D colors, if that makes sense. You match up the cases and do the algorithm until every sticker on the top is either a U or D sticker, and everything on bottom is a U or D sticker.

Sorry, I'm not good at explaining. Some of the more experienced roux users will have something more useful to say I'm better.

4a is orientation

use the pattern from roux's site to apply to a specific case and repeat until all you pieces are oriented.

Oriented means that all the U stickers are U or D stickers and all the D stickers are U or D stickers.

F L B R stickers don't matter right now.

actually you pretty much nailed it.

Basically with the cases on Roux's site, you do the 'algorithms' that that case falls into, which will lead into another case unitll you have, three on top and one on bottom (bad edges) and then they will all be solved.

ill do an example.

on a solved cube (with your Last Layer face on top) do:
U M2 U2 M' U2 M' U2 M2 U2 M2 U M' U' M U M2 U M U' M' U2 M' U' M U2

look at your cube and you notice that the UB edge does not have a U/D sticker on the U face, therefore it is bad, and DF has the U/D color on the F face so its bad (because if its on the F face it cant be on the U/D face.

now look for that case on roux's site, youll notice that its similar to the second case in the M'UM' category, it is just flipped.

therefore you would do the inverse of the 'alg'
so instead of M'UM' you would do, MU'M.

this puts the cube into another EO position, one closer to the oriented state.

the bad edgs are now DF UF UR and UB, three on top one on bottom.

AUF (adjust the U face (make a U turn)) so that the three edges on top point forward (meaning they are at UR UF UL) then do M'UM'

Now all edges are oriented.

my solution to this alg is

EO: MU'MUM'UM'
UL/UR MU2MU'M2
4c. U'M2U2M2U2

My solution for Gears' scramble.
EO: M' U M U M' U' M'
L&R: U M2 U
M: M2 U2 M U2 M'

thank you so very very much jms_gears1!!! and waffles :p!!! Thank you thank you!! I can now slow with roux every single time!! its just my times are 3+ mins with roux. I really suck at block building but i will work on that in time. so no more dumba** questions from me about roux...for now at least....
