Okay, so I know the question of wich speedcubing method is best has been asked many times before and you guys and gals are probably sick of seeing these sorts of threads (if you can direct me to a thread that already answers all of my questions then that would be great) but I am still unable to find the answer that I am looking for.

Currently I use roux and average around 20-25 seconds, I also know ZZ but haven't done all that many timed solves using it (I probably average around sub-40 or sub-30). What I want to know is which method has the potential to ultimately get faster times if it were developed to its max and which method will I be able to progress faster in.

With roux, I feel like progression is a lot more difficult because there aren't many algorithms while with ZZ, unless I know full ZBLL, I always have a clear goal to work towards.

At the same time, I have used roux for a long time and so I am very used to blockbuilding using the M slice. Is there a good variant of ZZ that uses intuitive blockbuilding?

Also, is ZZ any good for other events such as big cubes. I recently switched to the meyer method for 4x4 but I know that roux can't be used on anything bigger due to the difficulty of M slices. Would ZZ be more transferrable to other events?

And finally, which method are we the furthest away from reaching its fullest potential as I want to be able to continue using this method in the future without regretting not prioritising a different method?

I know I have written/asked a lot and I might be mistaken about some aspects of ZZ but any help is massively appreciated. Please give me both objective and subjective advice as your opinions mean a lot.

As a ZZ enthusiast, I think there are no known methods that will ever surpass Roux. ZZ is a fun eccentric method that I have argued is at least as viable as CFOP (see paper linked in signature), but Roux is unfairly good. My brief evaluation of ZZ vs Roux is as follows (I haven't done the proper research as I have for CFOP vs ZZ so maybe take with a grain of salt)
  1. FB is equal to EOcross
  2. SB is equal to first 2 ZZ pairs
  3. CMLL better than last 2 ZZ pairs
  4. L6E better than ZBLL

You'll very probably wanna go with Roux

There is of course the Goal of CmLL+EO/Pinky Pie which has about 360 Algorithm. That sure is a goal.
M slices, at least for me, are not problematic at all at modern 5x5s. I also use Algorithms with M Moves for 6 and 7. But to be fair, I am an adult and have bigger Hands than the current average speedcuber.

Furthest away from theoretical perfection? Roux
Since out of the Big 3, Roux has the smallest percentage of algorithmic sequences during the solve, so Roux is the hardest of them to reach high TPS averages. Will they however be archieved, Roux solves with, say, 7 TPS will, by statistics be faster than 7 TPS solves with CFOP or ZZ.

I would say roux.

after you learn the method you have to focus on blockbuilding efficiency, learning better cmll and drilling it and getting better at lse by learning eolr

to have the full potential of zz you would have to learn a ton of algs and its pretty hard to manage be good with every one of it. I'm not saying it's impossible, but compare with roux.

also, zz uses <L,U,R> for f2l, which is said to be ergonomical, but is not really good if you think it trough
roux uses <R,r,U,M> which can be insanely fast

EDIT: also, Tao Yu voted on roux, so we can close the thread and never talk about this again lol

cfop

Let's all be real here. Unless you wanna try pushing ZZ for whatever reason, you are gonna be better off with Roux. Less algs, the potential for better efficiency, simplicity. All really good things to have. Plus that doesn't even include all the fancy experimental expansions to Roux that haven't been pushed.

Stick with Roux. It is much better than ZZ. However, this does not mean that you shouldn't learn ZZ. ZZ is very useful for feet and also teaches EO, which is very helpful for F2L and last layer which you have to do on big cubes. If you care about big cubes a lot, definitely learn ZZ. For 3x3, it won't help you that much. Learning CFOP might be useful though as it is better.

Thank so much to everyone who replied or took part in the poll. I think its best I stick with roux for now 🙃

I use CFOP but I can tell that Roux definitely has the potential to be quite a bit faster. It’s just underdeveloped
Yeah, I also agree, Roux is probably better than CFOP, it is just way too underdeveloped compared to CFOP. Once Roux has as much development as CFOP I think it will be a better method, but I will probably stick with CFOP, because the M slices taking up a good amount of the solve is not my preference.

I'd say roux. I just learned it last week, and already have gotten a 33 second solve after 37 timed solves (I average 18 with cfop). And it's a lot of fun. That being said, I'm having trouble finding algorithms for the last six edges (a pdf or something), so if anybody knows of anything, that'd be great!
