Got a problem. I got my Revenge (4^3) to where I'm starting to solve it like one would a regular 3^3 cube. I can make the cross and then... nothing. When I try to move a corner into position, I can match the top, but the sides are reversed with respect to the rest of the cube.

I've already tried searching this as a parity problem without success; the pages I find mention that parity problems become apparent after solving F2L, not before. What kind of problem is this?

That means your centers are not solved in their correct positions.

Look at the centers of a 3x3 cube, and compare it to the 4x4 centers.

To solve this problem, switch any two centers on the cube.

An easy way to check your cube's color orientation is to look at the corner cubies. Even just looking at a single one, white/blue/red for example, would show you the orientation of those colors relative to each other when solved - assuming you know which colors are opposite each other on your cube you can deduce the rest so that you know how your centers should be oriented when you solve them.

Personally I just learned my cube's orientation and tend to solve the first three centers in the (relatively) same order each solve. I solve my bottom color green, then know that looking at the cube I should have red on my F face and yellow on the R face. Blue & white fall into place from there. Never get the "slots aren't oriented properly" issue anymore, now I'm just working on memo'ing my parity algs ;)

And yes, before anyone says it, I know it's a bit weird to solve green first :) but I did it that way when I first learned the cube and I've never gotten the hang of solving any other color first even when I've tried. Honestly though it does well for me since I have color recognition issues in low light levels so having the green pieces on my bottom layer means I don't confuse it with blue anymore when I'm not sitting in a well-lit room.
