The title says it all:

Basically, I have an old unmodded Meffert's megaminx, and I've wanted to make more, just in case I mess up the modding. Basically, I would 3-d scan it, make molds for all the pieces, and then use ABS plastic and remake the whole megaminx. The reason to do this would be because a modded old Meffert's is still considered to be close in terms of performance to the dayan. Also, since they don't make them anymore, it would be nice to have backups so that I don't have to worry about messing it up. So basically, do you guys think this would work? Would ABS plastic work? Any tips for the molding process? And on a completely different issue, is this ethical? Should I even do it because of the ethical issues?

Feedback will be very much appreciated.

I guess my question is: why? This seems a huge tradeoff in terms of both time and money (making molds? really?) just for the opportunity to mod an old puzzle with peace of mind.

Why not just start with a current puzzle?

Basically, this is more of a fun project, and if it turns out good, great, and if it's horrendous, whatever. Also, I have newer megaminxes, and I don't particularly like the feel of them. And yes, this is just to have piece of mind with my old megaminx
