Disclaimers:
  • Personal Opinion here (it may not be well thought of, or may not be of pressing concern)
  • Please ignore this thread if you want this discussion topic ridiculous. Also, I would appreciate if you do not pour any hate on why this particular line of thought exists.
  • I do not wish to make a WCA forum post on this, as WCA would not take this feedback at all into their consideration, take this renaming task seriously or on priority at any levels or initiate discussion on this to reach the correct conclusion. To save everyone's time I will just post here.
  • This topic is not on high priority to implement but moving forward it is important to describe the WCA Non Profit Organization clearly.

The "World Cube Association" is misleading terminology on two major fronts!
  • We are not an association or should not be categorized as one in 2025, we are a non-profit organization company registered in the US and "trying" to serve the global speedcubing community.
  • We do not represent only the Rubik's cube as there are a total of 17 events held at major championships and full fledged WCA competitions

    Final thoughts:
  • I am fine with WCA being called WCA as well, as I would much prefer speedcubing reaching out to larger audiences rather than one organization doing the right thing and named precisely.
  • I am fine if it takes years to do the right thing as the WCA is still a volunteer based organization with not so strong enough vision.
  • I want this renaming process to be thought of systematically.

I like World Puzzles Organization (WPO) the most.

There is Rubik's clock, which is not a twisty puzzle technically. Maybe FTO will be added in a near future.

I think that in a distant future 15-puzzle could be added, and why not loopover virtual puzzle? We can't say that will never happen.

Also, rubik's magic was part of WCA in the past and it can be hard to consider it a twisty puzzle.

Also, if we use the criteria that allowed rubik's magic and rubik's clock to make part of WCA, we could add rubik's 360 too, but it can also not be considered a "twisty puzzle".

That why I like the term World Puzzles Organization the most, and that make the name shorter also, and more general

Or we could mantain WCA and remove clock

let's change the name to YMCA, that means:

Your Mostly Cubing Association

Benefits of this name:

The "Your" in it make the people feel they belong to the community
Mostly Cubing = that express that cubing is the main activity but allow to include other related hobbies, like: clock, competitive dancing and speed painting
Association = that keeps the tradition of the name, even if it is not an Association anymore

One thing we arent keeping track of, is that its officially World CUBING Association, if your solving clock, your considered to be cubing, so WCA is actually quite normal, but the name is getting boring lmao

What's the point of posting this here if you're not going to post it on the WCA forums? Nearly nobody on this website has the power to make an actual change in the organization. And if you're acknowledging the fact that your proposal might be seen as ridiculous by a majority of people and is not something that the WCA would even consider, then I think it speaks a lot for the merit of the proposal as a whole.

I’m trying to understand how “association” is misleading. That doesn’t imply that the WCA isn’t nonprofit; it just means that it’s a formally organized group of people with a common goal/interest.
WCA operates now at a larger scale with organizational goals.

I think the definition of association seems to be a misfit to describe what a potentially sporting body would do.

Hi,

I want to rather all the opinions here and do not wish to initiate the change as I believe it won't be a priority for the WCA.

I do think this proposal has a lot of merit, however I don't think it's the right time to post it, or it deserves any priority or urgency from the WCA board.
