Recognition problem in learning OLLs

I've been learning the OLLs slowly for the past month or two, and I've just started learning them consistently. For the past week I've learned 1 or 2 a day, and it's been going pretty well. The only thing that worries me is that my recognition takes a ridiculous amount of time for some cases. I always get messed up on the lightning bolt cases :P Should I stop learning more OLLs until I can consistently recognize all of the ones I know?

Can anyone give any advice on fast recognition? (8, 9, 34, 43 here)

I would work on a case and master it for a day. Just practice the alg while doing regular solves. After a day, do another and practice it while doing mpre solves. After building up practice for recongition, it would become easier. You need to get used to seeing the case in regular solves and knowing what to do.

I figured that would be the right way to do things. I just got a bit discouraged seeing some of my solves jump up 10 seconds :D

Look at how the yellow stickers are grouped along the sides. For the first two there are two sets of two yellows and for the last two they're scattered.
All of those are sune/antisune variations btw. Two are "wide sunes" and the other two are "M(') (anti)sune U(')M(')"

I would recommend just doing solves, and when you see a case you cant quickly recognize just take your time but get it right. After some practice it'll be second nature.

i have a similar problem too
when i learn some new oll algs, i sometimes mix them up and do the alg for the wrong case or mixmatch algs

I hated these cases too, what I did was relearn the case that has the bolt on the right side of the cube to make it on the left... that way all the bolts are on the left. So when I see a bolt I quickly put it on the left and that gives me time to spot if the back most square is on the left or middle, and if the side yellows are grouped or scattered.

yes , whenever you learn something new, be it f2l, or full pll, or full oll, the times will initially go up, but when they come down, they will eventually be better than they were. Just make sure you dont do 2 look in something u know( even if u are unsure of it) :)

i can recognise those cases very easily but i cant quite put it into words. if you want me to i can try make a video on what algs i use for those and how i recognise them. those cases are actually some of my favourite olls but they did take me a few days to get the hang of

It doesn't happen with 'full' PLL,atleast for me it didn't

full PLL made me faster and my times never increased

What I do is look for the two groups of 2 on the sides. If I see them I go for one of the wide sunes.
If not I put the outside single dot on the bottom then pick left or right.

The ones I can't seem to recognize quick are the awkward ones. (37,38, 54,55)

I found it helpful to download the pdf, they are grouped by shape on there. I don't think any group has more than 4 variations.

Not sure if it will help but for me I learned a group at a time, so yes all small lightning bolts together, not the same day I hasten to add, I limited myself to 1 case a day unless it was a mirror or inverse when I would do two. I would learn to recognise all cases for a given set before learning any algorithms. So I made sure I could recognise each case in that set and when I could I would start on the corresponding algorithms. I even gave each case a friendly name at that point.

This method did help my recognition and I have never really has problems recalling the exact alg. A lot of recognition speed comes with using the algs and practice unfortunately. As others have said before don't be tempted to two look any alg you know. If you get stuck on an alg you know review it there and then. There is a lot to be said of making sure you know the correct solution to something you got wrong at the time so you don't remember something wrong.

But recognition whilst learning OLL is never a fast business. Once you have all 57 learned is the time you can really start improving recog.

This is what I did to have an easy recog when I learned those olls:
When I saw the shape on top, I would know if it was a left or right bolt when I AUF with the single oriented edge pointing to me, then I looked at the sides, if the corner in front of the oriented edge was with the top color to the side, I know its a double fruruf case, if it was on front it was a fat sune/anti-sune case..

34 and 43 are the "wide sune" cases that Sa967st was talking about. Learn those first (they're really easy), as they have the easiest recognition. Just know that if you don't have two blocks of yellow on the sides, you have one of the other cases.

If you only have one block of yellow on the side, then what you can do for recognition is make it so that the lightning bolt is always against the left side of U. If the block is in the top, do the F RUR'U' F' alg. You would know this is "allowable" because the F move doesn't break up the yellow block on the left face. If the yellow block is against the F face, then doing that initial F would break up that block.

Also, if you want a bit finger friendlier version of the alg badmephisto suggests, do F RUR'U' F' U' f URU'R' f'. This gives you the same shape that you can solve without putting the top of the T on right side (which means if you get the 6 move T but it's a U2 off, just do f URU'R' f' instead :P).

Although, I suggest learning Sa967st's algs for cases 8 and 9 as they are faster (for me) than the algs proprosed by badmephisto.

thank would be helpful? whats ur youtube name?

You guys were right, I got better at recognizing them. It just takes a few days of solves before you get used to it :)

Thanks for everyone's help :D

I used to use the algorithms on the site for 8 and 9. But I got really tired of those, so I decided to just do fat sune whenever I see the pattern on the top. Recognition for those cases is actually pretty easy, but IMO, for the finger tricks that I have, doing fat sune followed by sune for OLL 8 and 9 is just easier.

It does make recognition super easy as well, but that wasn't my main motive for switching.
