[WR] Rami Sbahi - 0.58 2x2 Single and 1.55 Average

Matthew 5:10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

You could say that Rami was persecuted, since it is quite the punishment for you to lose the single and average WR as the result of an individual. I am sure that some good will come out of this situation. Skewb?

Some notes

  • We know who told him, likely WDC will handle it from here.
  • Scramble was 1 move to R2 F2 R2, anyone who does Varasano (not Ortega :P) would see the 5-move solution at least. Cancellation to 4 is easy to see.
  • This was not fun to deal with. Feel really bad for Rami.
  • The kid who got the scramble did not get it directly from the scrambling table. However, he was filming a ton of people, and I had my eye on him (apparently not well enough to snatch him in the audience). He likely got the scramble by looking at his video of others doing that scramble.

The competitor had already done his solves for the round, I know since I scrambled for him.
Its a 4 move scramble, let's be honest, it's easy to remember that much.

Good on you for being honest, man. It'd be nice if you actually could get the world record, but oh well.

I wouldn't really call this being persecuted for righteousness' sake, but I still hope he gets some WR. He really deserves it.

That sucks man, there's nothing you could do. If I was the first person to get the scramble and I yelled out the solution, everyone would just miss out on a potential WR.

In this particular case, Rami clearly has far more than enough skill to figure out the optimal 1-look solve to this scramble in inspection, so I think it is not unreasonable to say that seeing the scramble earlier gave him no advantage over other fast competitors, and that he should be able to keep the solve. We'll see that the WCA guys think though.

I don't like the idea that a competitor can deny someone else the ability to solve a very easy scramble, especially when such scrambles are so rare and have such a substantial effect on the final time. After I heard about this at a competition earlier today, I was kind of half-seriously thinking: if someone loses the ability to get a legitimate time on a scramble for a reason like this, they should not be given a random scramble as a replacement, but one of the same rough difficulty (optimal movecount, say, if it's a shorter puzzle, i.e. 2x2/skewb/pyra/3x3/clock/sq1). The idea obviously has problems of its own, but it might be more fair than replacing a scramble where an 0.58 is possible with a scramble where an 0.58 is completely unattainable.

As much as I think this is impossible to execute well, I like this idea.

Easy. Different groups.

By what's been said above it seems they know who it was. That means that he can be punished which is good.

Unlucky Rami. Great job on the solve however :)

I thought that different groups have different scrambles, to eliminate the cheating process? At least, that's how we do it in New Zealand, I think?

Kudos to Rami for dealing with the situation honorably and to the delegates on hand for investigating the incident thoroughly.

A situation where no part of the competitor-scrambler-judge trifecta seems to be at fault for initiating an incident...will be interesting to see the verdict on this one.
