which megaminx is better, the qj minx or the mf8 minx? "my cubing master" would like to know.

I'd say the Meffert's one.

If I had to pick between the two I think I'd go with QJ.

mf8 sucks ... and QJ is a copy of mefferts, which is 1000 times better (Balint Bodor told me QJ was a copy of mefferts O__o) =D

Although Balint Bodor may be one of the best Megaminxers out there I am not sure he is correct.

I may be totally wrong, I am having a break from cubing. But unless, since I have been gone, QJ had made a massive change to their megaminxes then QJ is not a Meffert's clone and neither is the MF8.

QJ Megaminxes are just PVC Megaminxes, absolutely nothing like a Meffert's and incredibly bad in my opinion. I can only base my views on the two that I own.

MF8s are as close to a 'clone' you can get. It's similar but not quite there, the pieces are slightly different in shape and made of different plastics. Yet again, I can only base my opinion on the fact that the MF8 I own is not like a Meffert's.

Here are some photos of the pieces from the QJ, PVC and MF8.
Megaminx Comparison

Please correct me if I am wrong but I think there is some kind of mix up. And, as a side note, should this not be in hardware? I wouldn't normally waste my time with these threads but as there is quite a bit on information on the forum about this I thought I might as well chip in, it would have been simple for them to find out by searching, though.

New MF8 Megaminx. All it needs is lube and a little tension adjustment. The QJ megaminx, I have to do a lot of modding before it became unpoppable and smooth. I'm getting a Meffert's Megaminx soon, but for now, I use both MF8 and QJ.

First, those QJ's are HEAVY. Like, the weight of 2 storebought cubes. The MF8 is a good weight, and after lubing and adjusting the tension to really loose, you have yourself a mighty fine puzzle. I've only had my minx since right after Christmas, but it moves quite smoothly. And it hasn't popped yet in normal use-just the center caps sometimes are annoyingly loose.

Seriously? maybe I have a bad mf8 minx then. I 8 months ago and it was really, really poppy. I had to put new springs in to fix it. It still pops every once in a while too, but it's not that bad, I guess.

When were the newer mf8's released?

There are 2 MF8 Megaminx, the new one was released somewhere around May last year if I'm not mistaken. The newer one has a more faded colour of tiles and the tiles look thin and cheap. But performance is good. The old one, tiles are more thick and the colour is brighter.

Edit: Sorry, it wasn't on may, somewhere around September maybe. My mistake, sorry.

the QJ minxs are not similar to meffert's at all. they have solid pieces which made the minx very heavy. i'd say get a mf8, cuz QJs are just too heavy to speedsolve with.

i have the mf8 megaminx II (2) i'd never experienced it poped.. really... even you loose it so much.. it wont pop... (well i have pvc megaminx, mefferts, and the new mf8,, i choose mf8, the best)

the first mf8 suckz!! its like every turn it popz!!

I dunno... my thin enough on my mf8... but I had to mod it to reduce popping. maybe I got a bad minx. I'm thinking about getting a mefferts though XD

I have quite a few but I still don't have a true Meffert's: when mefferts.com announced that megaminxes were available again last year I ordered one (for $28USD) but I was supplied with a MF8 minx!!! Very disappointing as I was expecting a genuine (and now seemingly legendary :) ) Meffert's Minx.

However this MF8 is real quick and my preferred minx for speed. It pops like mad though and I guess that this is the first edition.

I recently got a black QJ megaminx from popbuying (SKU 24166 $8.04) which is just a cheap PVC minx with pretty good tiles. This is a fine puzzle after sanding all the sharp internal edges that would cause the lockups (as per Stefan's description) and of course adjusting the spring tension and lubricating.

Most of my other minxes are PVC minxes - they are all cast from the same mold but vary in how nicely finished they are, e.g. my puzl.co.uk minx was nicest PVC out-of-the-box with less sharp edges, good quality lexan tiles (well placed, good colours), suitably lubed, no need for screw adjustment, etc. Some other PVC minxes have been thrown together with little quality control, cheap and badly placed stickers, random tensions, etc. You have to spend some time working on them to have a satisfactory puzzle but like most cubers I don't mind dedicating a few hours when results count.

I have a QJ, an MF8 I and an MF8 II, as well as a supernova.

I like my old MF8 the most, but probably because i did about 6000 solves on it and i am used to he feel.
The QJ is just too heavy to have a good feel in your hands.
The new MF8 is literally unpoppable, but the corner cutting could be better.

Overall I´d say, get the new MF8 II, get used to its feel and sub 1 it^^
