The idea is to have a fixed but optional maintained naming system for the competition name which a specific event list.

  • Competitions worldwide have already been following this with PBQs, Don’t DNF, Side events, NxN prefix to competition names.
  • The main motivation is for a competitor to get the event list details just from the name.
  • There are a lot of possibilities for 17 events, 17C1 + 17C2 + … + 17C17 which is 2^17-1 = 131071 event list possibilities.
  • I do not expect each event list combination to be tagged by a name, but the most frequent ones can be tagged and maintained by the WCAT(maybe?).
Pros:

  1. Standardised naming of WCA competitions
  2. Easier to search competitions with specific event list on the WCA competition page (it is already easy now)
  3. Make it easier for a new organizer to choose which events are generally combined together
  4. Easier transition to tier system of event list in the WCA (future WCA idea?)
Cons:

  1. Maintaining an evolving name list for 131071 possibilities is a pain
  2. More work for the WCAT
  3. Organizers may not agree with the prefix for their specific competition
  4. Overkill and not a point of discussion at all
  5. Competition names should not have any restrictions or prefixes (We already have to add Rubik’s to World Championships)
  6. If it is optional to add this prefix, there is no point in maintaining a list
Disclaimer: This is my personal idea. I do not wish for immediate execution of this idea, the main aim is to see if this is an overkill, or a valid thing to pursue. For example, I want a competition with 5x5, 5BLD only to be named as Professor’s Cube Only competition.

I think this could be a cool idea even if it is a lot of work. But I also think organizers should have the option between original names and event default names. I once considered something similar, and had a spreadsheet to boot, but I didn't consider the naming convention. Here's the template: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AIbx6urWI1vFrGLn6gqQcSxzhKH3n-3qNDTZt_r4Xpw/edit?usp=sharing

It should be noted that it does not differentiate between FMC single comps and FMC mo3 comps. It's not hard to add one but it took me a whole morning in September (?) to make this sheet since it does have 131073 rows
