So I have a friend who is a decent beginner cuber, he is sub-60 and uses a GAN12. So you'd think he's set up to improve his times and become an actual speedcuber, right?

Wrong.

I've asked him about this multiple times, including today, but he just isn't interested in committing to improving his speedcubing skills. This is where you guys come in. I need your help to convince him to start speedcubing. I have another friend who quit cubing before he got to sub-60, and I really don't want this guy to fall off as well.

I'm having the same prob 😭🤣. Maybe tell him how people will be impressed when he get fast, and how he put in all the work to get to this point, so he should keep going? IDK.

Tell him that he doesn’t need to commit to cubing like other sports (compare the difficulty in improving at a sport he likes compared to cubing). Tell him that once you start speedcubing he’ll realize that speedcubing is much bigger than what people think. Show him the community, how fast people can solve cubes, even show him the 6 year old chinese kids that are 10x faster than him. You want to do this gradually and not all at once. You need to find something to motivate your friend.

I can’t give much advice because your friend just doesn’t want to commit. I read a saying today: “If you aren’t willing to learn you won’t learn. If you are determined to learn nothing can stop you.” (or something like that). You can’t force someone to do something they don’t want to do. One thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t push it too hard, or else he’ll get annoyed and that would ruin everything.

oh no😭
that type of motivation will run out fast

It's not hard to improve, and if he doesn't feel the need to become super fast or competitive, he could at least hit sub-40 or sub-30, I avg 32 and everyone in school thinks I'm really good. I remind them that a little kid from China holds a 3 second world record. I am getting better though.
