I got a 5x5 cube last Christmas and decided to try and solve it without learning any algorithms. The approach I took was to build increasingly larger blocks until I had a 4x4 block (as in Petrus for 3x3), then I solved the +-centers intuitively and the X-centers with commutators. I intended to use commutators for the edges as well, but ended up with two swapped edges that I couldn't solve.

Is it possible to use commutators to fix parity, or are they only good for 3-cycles? If not, is there another way I can invent the needed sequence?

"invent the needed sequence?" It's already invented. Just use parity.

I wish I could help, I tried this once, and well I just kept messing around with it until it was fixed. Later I found out my own way to do it, but the algorithmic way was faster, I wish you luck.
