The problem with a triathlon or quadathlon is that it would favor those who are fast on 5x5 cubes. For example, a person with times of 15s on 2x2, 30s on 3x3, 1:30 on 4x4, and 2 min. on 5x5 would beat a person with 5s on 2x2, 15s on 3x3, 1 min. on 4x4, and 3 min. on 5x5. It is possible, however, to set up a formula to rank people without favoring anyone. If the times are recorded in seconds, they could be multiplied to make a more fair ranking. This, however, has two possible problems. Firstly, a lucky 2x2 solve could easily cut a person's score in half, which it shouldn't. Also, it might be too complicated and/or boring and/or meaningless to multiply the times, and adding them would be simpler and easier to comprehend. I would be interested in hearing feedback on other possible rating systems.
