If you are a total newb to the one-handed business, then for righties the right hand will be faster. But as you progress, most people are too lazy to learn new algorithms for their right hands. Therefore, most use the left hand and sacrifice a little speed that will probably be overcome with a little more practice.
Use which hand you want. I originally used my right hand for OH because it was my dominant hand; however, after practicing 2H, my right hand would get too tired for OH, so I switched to left hand OH.

Err... maybe I'm a noob (I do rarely practice OH, actually)... but have you ever seen a guitar (or any stringed instrument) player?
What hand do they use to simply strum? What hand do they fret on?
Precisely, the left hand does much more work than the right. This is because for most people, your non-dominant hand is more flexible, which is needed for OH.
