I had messed around with my cube since the early 1980s, never got past the middle layer of beginner's method for memorization (can do F2L), but could solve with singmaster's book. Two (or three) years ago, I ran into brunson at a friend's get together in the mountains, and he was playing with a speed cube.

A few weeks ago, I dug out my old cube... so slow, binding, sticky, icky... and decided I should finally get a better cube. Last Monday, I logged onto Amazon, decided the DaYan GuHong looked cool and ordered one. Then I decided I'd start trying to learn the rest of the moves while I waited for it... and discovered this forum, and lots of cool methods -- and the rep of the GuHong, and hmm.... maybe a teardown and lube will save my old cube from the trashbin....

But compared to you all, I'm slow. Sloooooooow. Hence the nick. (and to most of you, I'm old, too...)

What I've learned in the last two days has already improved my F2L time greatly. Looking forward to picking up more tricks. My personal goal in to be under a minute (for at least one solve) by the end of summer.

Welcome to the forums! You're not the only person from the 80's who was delighted to find all these resources.

Make sure to give badmephisto a thorough viewing--he has some of the highest protein for beginners and intermediates.

Welcome to the forums, hope you get "fazt", and hopefully you'll learn where that saying comes from :)

But first tips for future speed cubers: take your time, and have fun!

faz is amazing, been watching his vids already on youtube. . . and his rep with the guhong was cool to discover after I had already ordered one!!!

I admit, when I found out it had come yesterday afternoon, I left work early to get home and start cubing...

UPDATE:
Five months of casual speedcubing in the evening when I'm not too busy being Dad at softball/baseball practice, etc and __I made it__! My best clocked time is 49 seconds, and I'm pretty much always under a minute unless I misread the cube. Time to shoot for 30 seconds . . . by Christmas?! I'll need to learn a refinement to my F2L (working on it) and at least 3 more PLL algorithms, but I can see it is doable.

Also picked up a void cube on the way, and a pyramorphix and a pyramix (had one when i was a kid, can still solve it) -- and just got a Daiyan MF8 4x4x4 a couple days ago for my birthday. Fun times!
