I FINALLY got my order form cube4you, after they were almost two months laste (They did send me two minis free, though). I was excited, cause the Chattahoochee tounament has the magic. I hadn't had one in ages, cause the Rubik's site is out, I don't have extra strings and even if I did, I can't re-string.

One. Turn. And a string broke. ONE SOLVE! It's not like I had been going for days on it. ONE SOLVE!

I think I'll have to not be able to compete using the magic in the Chattahoochee. Hopefully by US Open or Stetson I'll be able to get one.

The Magic was one of my best events, too. AND one of my favorites:(

I'll be in Chattahoochee; I could give you extra strings there (and probably even restring it, if we could meet beforehand). I guess the problem is that you won't exactly have much time to practice (although you'd beat me pretty badly even without any practice, I'm guessing - your Magic times are WAY faster than mine!). I bought some of the DIY magic sets from cube4you with my most recent order so I'd have extra strings. (They should be compatible.)

Do you live right there in Atlanta, or are you traveling to go to the competition? I still haven't picked a hotel for us to stay in there yet.

I find it amazing that you can solve a magic in less than 1.5 seconds but never learned to restring one. :)

Nothing to cry "F" about though, right?

I would tell cube4you.com that their string had a defect or something if it wasn't your fault for it breaking. Maybe they'll send you some free string and more minis.

OOH, maybe you can ask for a Magic, lol.

One string breaking isn't a big deal, if it's double-strung (like it should be).

I thought of that, so just took that one string off. Tried it a few more times and it was OK. Then, I think about the 5th solve, it just went crazy. Half of the broke.

I checked the strings, and they appear to be very old. They are extremely brittle.

That sounds like the Magics I've gotten from cube4you; they're really not very good.

The most recent set I got had most of the strings doubled; it was a little better than the first set. But not quite all. And about 3 strings broke on each one the first night I got them.

I live about 40 minutes from there.

And man, that would be great. I'm ordering strings now, just in case I can figure it out. But if not, and you do it, I'll pay you, of course.

I'll probably suck. I haven't really gotten to solve for about 2 months. I'm worried I'll be hititng in the 1.80s - 1.90s >.<

wow, i got my magic yesterday from cube4you and a string broke, but when i try to stick the rest back on they seem to small, they wont go all the way around? Any help?

@Leviticus
You might have to use some force, all strings should be able to stretch. Use some kind of flat tool like a screw driver or some other string that you can get a hold of to pull the magic string in place.

@Hadley4000
cubesmith has been out for ages. I even asked about strings, but he dont know when he will have a stock up again.
So I had to make my own. At a fish store i found some string a some of those metal things that hold the strings together. Its quite easy to make your own the only thing is to get the right length.

Here are some links for Magic repair:

and here further down is a guide on how to make your own strings:

the string has to have a length of 44.5 or 45 cm ;)

I have yet to get a sub-2 solve on Magic. :( Really close sometimes (my best is like 2.04 or something), but never sub-2. So like I say, you'll probably beat me pretty badly even with no practice.

1/4 of the time isn't often at all!

Michael Gottlieb, the former NAR holder for magic single DNFs more than half the time.

yeah i DNF 75% of the time..especially when its on a flat surface..if i start the timer with my wrists and keep the magic in my hands (illegal pose, but meh:P) i dnf about 1/10 of the time..and i got an avg of 5 of 1.8sec during school :)

I understand, I was practicing and bam string gets weirded then i try to put it back and then another string started to come out. I feel your pain.

David

Are you allowed to stop the timer with your palms? I mean most people I see stop the timer as they slam the magic down on the table, looks like they're stopping it with their wrists/palms...
