New to the game, choosing my first speedcube!

For a good cube I recommend Av.It feels alot faster then the fii but the Av is a very noise cube. With Lube DO NOT USE WD-40. Anything made by them will destroy your cube. Also buy from lightake instead of C4Y. C4Y got very expensive shipping but lightake I've heard that some of the cube are missing thing like part of an edge or something.

I bought from Cube Depot, they're a USA based company so it shouldn't take too long. It also said that their cube was a genuine Sheng En.

I'll be picking up some silicone lube to use on most of my cubes as damaged plastic is never good. I can always clean it up.

By the bye... anyone with a white cube.

Those splattered and textured plastic yo-yos are plastic dye jobs.
If you'd like a dyed cube, hit me up.
It's not like a paint, it's an actual dye. The plastic looks like it was meant to be that color from that point on.

OH AND BY THE WAY. SHENG EN FIIs COME PRE LUBED. THEY'RE GREAT OUT OF THE BOX :)

That sounds great. I can't wait for the cube to get here so I can start practicing with it. My old cube is doing me some good on learning some of the F2L alg's.

It's tough stuff but overall comparable to learning video game cheats.
Repetition and whatnot.

I've been seeing this thread for a while now, and seeming as you said you average 2:30 - 3:00, you shouldn't really get a good DIY cube until you break the 1 minute mark. You wont truly see what an AV, FII or GuHong or whatever you're gonna buy can do to your speed until you're doing 4LLL. I'm not really sure if someone's already said what I've just said but I can't really be bothered to look through the whole thread lol. So yeah, stick with your storebought/rubik's brand until you start to be getting lower times, under 1 minute.
"Well, I don't think one can really appreciate the true value of a DIY until they are sub-12." There is absolutely no basis for this. Why struggle with a stiff storebought unnecessarily?

You're not endearing yourself to me.

IV, I recommend using CRC on your storebought, just open it up, spray it in, and work it into the cube a lot (lots of random scrambling and solving). If not CRC, use jig-a-loo.

What type of lubricant do you use for your yo-yo's?

Funny thing that, often times with modern yo-yos we don't use lubricant because it causes slowdown in bearings rather than speed.

You can imagine putting a bunch of small balls in a glass of oil, they will spin slower than if put into a dry glass. The same works for yo-yos. Often times, though we use trumpet valve oil or sewing machine oil in small quantities so that our bearings do not deteriorate over time.

It gives us good sleep times and doesn't cause the yo-yo to become so responsive that we can't whip the string around for certain tricks without snagging however I've heard that petroleum based lubricants on Rubik's cubes can damage the plastic.

Well, if you average at over 2 minutes, speedcubes are not your priority. Buy a storebought, heck, buy a few storeboughts. By the time you start getting better times, you will have broken it in (Make sure you lubricate the cube, it will speed up breaking the cube in). After 2 years, my storebought cuts corners and turns better than any DIY I could imagine, and I perform 0 maintainence, other than the occasional lubrication...

And start using finger tricks if you haven't already. Using fingers instead of full hands will decrease your times TREMENDOUSLY. It's the first step in cubing.

Heck, using the beginner's method, I've accomplished 26.72 seconds with my storebought cube!

Lookahead and just general practice will really help.

And I really recommend for ANYBODY...just get a good speed cube. Yes, you may think you're doing awesome with a storebought, but you will realize how much better it feels with a good cube.

I want to get into yoyoing so can you please give me link to yoyo stuff please eg forms, shops, competitions

Forums::
www.yoyonation.com
www.theyo.com
www.yoyoexpert.com

Shops::
All forums have their respected shops but I suggest theyo because it's a smaller company and has cheaper shipping than most.

Competitions::
Most forums brief competitions about six months in advance so there's plenty of time to prepare. Some competitions happen at the same time each year, some don't. The World competition(Worlds) happens every year in August in Florida.

Places to learn about hardware, tricks, people::
www.yoyowiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
www.grawrd.com
www.mastermagic.com
www.yoyoexpert.com

Have lots of fun! Don't be shy, ask the guys on the forums if you need help. They're all helpful.

IMPORTANT!
Unlike this website where it isn't part of a store... do not mention other stores on each forum.
They get mad.
Don't mention Theyo on yoyonation.
Don't mention yoyonation on Theyo.
They're nice but they aren't business friendly sometimes. XD

Also note that the commerce though yo-yo communities is rather large and continuous.
Yo-yos are constantly being bought and sold via the forums for profit and for collecting.
If you'd like to get discounts on any items, don't hesitate to find a seller with good feedback and do business. It helps you out in the longrun and saves you money.

I live in Australia so is there any website I could go to. Also do you know any good tutorial to do the very basic moves. Whenever i try to do a simple move of letting it roll down then pulling it back up I always pull to early or not hard enough.

I am LOVING this cube, I feel like I want to practice more and can spend more time solving the cube than getting tangled and locked up in the corners. It's done wonders.

The first moves you should be learning are::
Brain Twister
Atom Smasher
Trapeze
Mach 5

There is no main resource for Australia as far as I know so you're in the same boat as a lot of other throwers. There are UK shops and JP shops but no AUS as far as I know.

There is one storebought yo-yo that recently has worked wonders but I'm not too sure about its availability in Australia and that would be the Freehand 2 with Brandon Jackson on the back(the 2010 model). It's an excellent beginner's throw.

is Atom Smasher close to Atomic Split? :P

and what is the trick called where you take the string so it leans on your throw finger and thumb, where you then whip the string between those finger under the yoyo, so the yoyo spins on the part of the string? :P (My Duncan FZ could do that =D)

I'll try find a new yoyo some time :) it's fun and people always gets amazed :P

That sounds like Gyroscopic flop... but I'm not sure.
Anyway, Atom Smasher is relatively the same trick, it's just been renamed millions of times.

Atomic Bomb
Atom Smasher
Atomic Split

There were also a few names used during the Cold War that excluded the use of "Atomic" because of fear of Nuclear war.

This.
Get a speedcube when your f2l is like say 10-15s.

I'd say it's a bit too late for that. I'm already having fun with a new cube. My FII came in yesterday and I'm having a blast. It's a lot easier and more fun to play on.

I guess like any skill-toy, the speed-cubing world has its purists.

BTW. F2L is a trip, learning it isn't just fun, it's strange and weird and different every single solve. I should've gotten into this sooner.
