Hello,

my name is 'woony' I'm 25yo and I live in Belgium. I've always been fascinated with juggling / puzzle / sleight of hand / magic stuff. So along the way I also came across the rubik's cube.
I always started it just by trying and got stuck at the end , getting frustrated , and sort of tossing it aside and go do something else. About a month ago I came across my cube again and set my heart on now actually being able to do it right. So i started with some research and so I learned solving the cube with the beginners method which had a lot of techniques I already used for myself. So with beginners method I am at around 2 minutes. But I want to go faster, so I find this forum , ordered a speedcube and now started on the F2L. :-)

So I am a complete noob at speedcubing, any advice will be welcomed ! I am sure this forum will help me on my journey, thanks in advance :)

woony.

Hey welcome to speedsolving! Im not that great of a speedcuber but when I was using the begginers method I was averaging around 70 seconds. So just a few basic tips lube your cube theres plenty of threads around here about it and plenty of vids on youtube. (dont use solid like lubes or WD40 I personally use silicone spray) Next know your algorithms inside and out and try to learn how to use your fingers for the algs instead of your whole hand (it helps out tons) you will figure these tricks out on your own mostly but there are vids to help you learn finger tricks but the bottom line is what works for you. Third just practice you will see your times drop slowly but surely. anyway good luck and again welcome to the community!

Thanks for the welcomes :)
I am thrilled to see this is such an active and positive community!

@chrisandstuff , I lubed my cube once using petroleum jelly. But I might have another look at it, to get it to go more smoothly. Good to know you can get close to one minute using the beginners method. That means just faster movement.

I mostly notice I loose most time when looking for the next step, or piece to move. Not the actual alg or movement.

Hi there,

Welcome to the amazing world of speedcubing. There are some great places to get tips from. Badmephisto is a great place to start. Also have a look at the wiki here.

Also, if you want to meet cubers, go to a competition. There is one in Zonhoven at the end of February. Lots of cubers will be there and it's a great place to enjoy cubing, have fun and learn from others. Have a look at the WCA website for more information.

Hello and welcome! I'm also new here and new to speedcubing. I just got my speedcube in the mail a few days ago and I love it!

Yea petroleum jelly isnt a good lube for your cube. Yea you can get close to one minute I actually have a few sub minutes using beginners method(although they were lucky had a simple antisune which was the only oll I knew at the time and a simple 3 corner rotation for pll) But now im using F2L and sub minute times are coming up a bit more often after a while of working on it. Yea looking for the next piece is usually a big lose in time (currently depending on how I can find or track my next piece determines if my times are sub minute or not) and badmephisto has great tips I really recommend watching his vids.

Welcome.

As hcfong mentioned: come and check out the Zonhoven comp.
If you can solve the cube you are allowed to compete and set an official WCA time.

Competitions are great for learning new stuff, people are generallya very friendly and willing to help other people out.

I just discovered badmephisto on youtube so, I'll keep checking out his videos!
I'll definitely check to come to Zonhoven if the date and time works out for me :) I CAN solve the cube :p so it would be cool to have an official time :)

got my new speedcube today! yay! :) it's the dayan guhon II stickerless.
siked, to bad I'm at work now, can't really play it now...

You might already know this, but the cube you bought is actually not competition legal as it allows you to see the colours of the BL and BR edges by just turning the U layer 45 degrees.

Oh, ok, actually I didn't, I will defenitly buy some other cubes aswell :p wanted to get the feel of a speed cube.
So what defines it being competition legal? stickers nonetheless? because the plastic isn't colored?

http://worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/#puzzles

That should link you to what the rules are on your puzzle. Colored puzzles are allowed as long as its the same color on the whole puzzle(in other words still has stickers or tiles to show the color of each piece) or at least thats how I interperet it im not for sure still new here so im giving me opinion. Let me know how that stickerless guhong works out though im considering getting one in the future. (but first my green guhong and yellow zanchi)

Have fun with your new kit bruv. Man, I wish I could turn back time to rediscover all of the awesome cubes I've played with.

Not to promote, but get a stickerless LingYun. You'll love it I'm sure. I still can't believe how awesome it is compared to all the other 3x3x3 stuff I have. Which is only short of pre 2009 kit.

Also enter my next givaway competition if you like, you can win a Godly GuHong amidst other fine hardware.

Thanks,

yes a new world is opening for me :).
It's completely different to a 'normal' RUBIK's cube. So I need to get used to it, it felt 'way' to loose how i got it, so I tightened it for now, to get used to it, and gradually start to loosen it more when I'm mastering the movements better. Other than that the cube seems awesome :)

@bapao, where can i find your giveaway then?

I'm trying to figure out which one I should buy next :)
