I call it the pugh method. It's not an advanced method, but it is better than beginner.

1) get a layer

2) fix the rest of the corners (oriented and permuted)

3) find an edge piece that goes in the top layer that is currently in the middle layer.

4) take the 'extra' color (basically the color that doesn't go on top) and turn the top face until it is matched up with a corner like this.

then, using this example, with the orange side as your right side and yellow as your top, you would do

R U' M' U R' M U

but before you do it, you look at the RU edge and look at where it needs to go. then you take the place where it needs to go and use a setup move to put it in the UL edge spot (make sure you keep the RF and RU edges in the same spot. then use that algorithm until you are done with all the top edges. (if two edges need to be swapped, try to look ahead and see something that will be a problem like a edge that is flipped and put that in the UL spot to be removed) once you are done with the last layer, you should only have the middle layer left.

5) line up your top layer, bottom layer, and centers.

6) use the algorithm z U2 M U2 M' z' to position your edges (it's a pretty easy alg to understand.)

7) orient any flipped edges (just look up algs. there's a bunch)
