Hi I am from Switzerland and started about half a year ago with (speed)solving.
It began with my partents in law who bought some cubes for my sister's kids, but no one could solve it.
As a kid of the 80's I had a cube as a kid but could never solve more than one face (i guess not even with the correct sides, because i never realized that this was important:rolleyes:)

I've learned it with a beginner method which involved sune, U-Perm and A-Perm.
I was very happy to solve it by myself but always saw methods to do it quicker and so i started to buy myself some better cubes, learn CFOP, learn full PLL, then full OLL...

As my username an title says I'm already a little bit older. With 46 I still hope to be in the first half of my life but compared the most cubers I could be their father or even grandfather.
So I'm a little limited with my old fingers, brain and eyes and probably will never get very fast but I like my new hobby a lot and cube a lot to get better.
Usually I do about an hour per day of seriuos cubing with smartcube timed solves, to learn new algs and improve some other stuff.
I addition to that i cube every free minute just for fun, but without timer and plans.

Due to limited competitions in my area I've neve be to a comp yet but in my daily solves I fight the 30 seconds barrier currently.
On a good day I can do a row of sub30 solves and get a sub 30 AO5 or even AO12, but my AO100 is still a little above the 30.
My best singles were a couple of 20:xx or 21:xx, but sub 25 times are still quite rare.

As for most cubers in this stage, my main weakness is lookahead and the fact that I can't solve harder crosses without looking for the last pieces.
Sometimes I still fail completly with stupid stuff like wrong crosses or dropping the cube in the middle of an alg o_O

For 2x2 I do ortega in around 10 seconds, for 4x4 I'm usually between 2 and 3 Minutes and for 5x5 something between 5 and 10 Minutes.

Are there any other older or swiss/german cubers here?

I'm not German or Swiss (well, I've got some ancient German ancestry) but I am older. I also learned in the 80s. Love competing and organizing. Have an official PB of 16.14, home PB of 11.11.
Not Bad. Thats around what I thought cold be possible in my age.
How long do you cube in competitions?

I think I could reach Sub 20 Average and Sub15 Single when I keep learning for a couple of years, but probably I'm too old for better times.

In the moment my limit is still my bad lookahead and this is a point I can definitly improve.

I’m not German or Swiss either but I’m 47 and have been cubing since the (very early) 80s too. I use Roux and my current average is a smidge over 21 and PB is 12.03. I learnt full CMLL in the last few weeks so times are all over the place right now but I hope to be sub-20 very shortly :)

Hi guys, I am also in my 40's. Back in 99 I started cubing while in University, there was a non-mandatory course where we studied the rubiks cube algebra and you would get 1 point in the exam to do it under 2 minutes. So I learnt how to solve it and I fight that barrier with a terrible cube, but there was almost no information or I was not eager to look it up. One year ago, my wife bought a cube for my dauthers and then I was doomed (:S) I wanted to sub-1 minut, then sub-40, and now I am fighting for sub-20. But I think, at our age sometimes is discouraging to see how fast young people may improve...

Good to hear other cases like mine :)

Welcome OldSwiss!
I'm not Swiss either, but I do have a few Swiss watches so perhaps Swiss by association? ;-)

Good luck with your goals.

I’m over 50 and I think like many older cubers I am interested in the cube in a lot of dimensions, not just speed.

My best recent time was about 30s, turning at barely over 1 TPS.

In this solve I got a little bit lucky in that the CMLL case solved in one look whereas normally I need to orient and then solve, but the main point here is that I’m excited to be at a point where I can be doing a very relaxed solve and still get a time in the 30-40s range. Turning slower but consistently seems to produce better results for me than rushing and making mistakes; the “oh !@#$” moment after a mistake is really more costly than relaxing and not making the mistake in the first place.

Finding new solution methods, teaching better beginner methods (it’s quite beyond me why we teach LbL as the basic beginner method, it is so much harder than necessary to learn and understand), building software to integrate with the now super-affordable bluetooth cubes, and doing a few speedsolves a day has kept my interest in cubing up for longer than I expected (I am currently in the middle of an almost year long phase of daily cubing).

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Yesterday I could make my first sub25 average during my cubestation weekly challenge
During this I was very good at making crosses, even the harder ones. That is one of my main weaknesses.
My AO100 is now at 30.20. A couple of good solves and I can beat it.

But earlier and late on the same day I could hardly reach some sub30 singles:rolleyes:

what is this cubestation weekly challenge?

btw, there is also a weekly competition here in the forum you may participate.

My suggestion when you get a bunch of bad times is to "punish" you with 5-10 minutes of slow/untimed solving, sometimes it helps

what is this cubestation weekly challenge?

In the GAN Cubestation App there is Match->Time Trial.

There you can do up to 120 Solves per week and the best 20 count and go into a weekly ranking.
Last week I was place 3240 with a time of 24:999

Usually I don't do the full 120 solves. I just do it until my time is better than the one for last week.
For the rest of my solves I use app.cubeast.com as there are more possibilities to see the statistics.
There you can also see the solving times vs. recognition time which is very interesting

For One on One Battles in cubestation I think I am to slow but it's fun to do solves for the ranking.

ah, this is with i-cube then, I don't have one

I think I can finally consider myself as Sub30 even if it's still not competition proofed.

Today I made a A012 with 26.xx and no times over 30.
My Ao100 is at 29.1 and falling

Since one or two weeks I can see the cross solutions.
I'm still quite slow executing them but i see them clearly in my head :p
A lot of practice finally payed out 😜
